Roberto Luongo tied his season high with 45 saves for the Panthers (41-30-8), are four points behind the Philadelphia Flyers for the second wild card into the Stanley Cup Playoffs from the Eastern Conference with one game in hand. Philadelphia lost 5-4 to the New York Islanders.
"He made some amazing saves when they had their pushes," Panthers coach Bob Boughner said. "He was the difference tonight."
The loss prevented the Predators (51-18-11) from clinching first place in the Central Division and the Western Conference. They have a three-point lead in the division over the Winnipeg Jets, who defeated the Montreal Canadiens 5-4 in overtime Tuesday. Nashville and Winnipeg each have two games remaining.
Filip Forsberg appeared to have tied the game for Nashville with less than one second left in the third period, but his goal was disallowed for goalie interference after review.
The Situation Room determined the "deliberate actions of (Viktor) Arvidsson's stick caused Luongo to spin and cause the covered puck to come loose prior to the goal."
"We pushed the goalie and the puck came loose and we scored, so I guess that's the way the cookie crumbles sometimes," Predators defenseman Ryan Ellis said.

Luongo, who will turn 39 Wednesday, started a back-to-back set for the first time this season and lost his shutout with 3:52 remaining. He won 3-2 against the Carolina Hurricanes on Monday.
"[I felt] better than I thought," he said. "After last night's game, I made sure that I did whatever was necessary to get the recovery needed within 24 hours to play again. I was happy the way I felt. I didn't really feel that sluggish. I felt pretty energized the whole game."
Jonathan Huberdeau and Colton Sceviour scored for the Panthers, who have won the first two games of a four-game homestand.
Sceviour, who has played on the fourth line most of the season, joined Aleksander Barkov and Evgenii Dadonov on the top line after doing so in the third period Monday.
"Obviously it's nice they show a little confidence to play you in that situation and you can come through and help the team in any way, and it worked out tonight," Sceviour said.
Roman Josi scored and Pekka Rinne made 31 saves for Nashville, which is 3-4-1 in its past eight games since a 14-0-1 run.
"We played a good game," Predators coach Peter Laviolette said. "Their goalie played really well. There's a lot at stake for them as well. Our guys played hard; we just couldn't hit the back of the net."
Huberdeau scored at 18:30 of the first period when Jamie McGinn's centering pass from the side of the net went in off his body for a 1-0 lead.
Sceviour made it 2-0 at 10:33 of the third period when he one-timed Dadonov's pass at the side of the net. Josi made it 2-1 at 16:08 with a backhand.
"It was a crazy finish," Boughner said. "Ten seconds to go and you're thinking it's over, then you see the clock tick down and the puck go in. It was the right call, I think. [Arvidsson] was preventing [Luongo] from making the save. It was a great to finish to a hard-fought game by both teams."
