There are some familiar surnames littered across rinks through the NCAA landscape, sons of fathers who made a name for themselves in the NHL.

Several fathers continue to be involved with NHL teams as executives, coaches and scouts. Here are some college players with those who distinguished themselves in the NHL.

Sascha Boumedienne, Boston University

A freshman defenseman and a well-regarded prospect for the 2025 NHL Draft. Boumedienne turned 18 on Jan. 17, is the youngest player in college hockey and has six assists in 23 games.

He is the son of Josef Boumedienne, a former assistant coach and scout with the Columbus Blue Jackets. Josef played 47 games for the New Jersey Devils, Tampa Bay Lightning and Washington Capitals.

Brett Chorske, Colgate University

The undrafted senior center played two years at Colorado College before transferring. He leads Colgate in scoring with 24 points (12 goals, 12 assists) in 24 games.

Tom Chorske played 596 games for the Montreal Canadiens, Devils, Ottawa Senators, New York Islanders, Capitals, Calgary Flames and Pittsburgh Penguins. He was a member of New Jersey's 1995 Stanley Cup championship team.

Brendan Fitzgerald, University of New Hampshire

The sophomore defenseman is the son of Devils general manager Tom Fitzgerald, the first captain of the Nashville Predators who following two seasons at Providence College played 1,097 games for the Islanders, Florida Panthers, Colorado Avalanche, Predators, Chicago Blackhawks, Toronto Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins.

Brendan has seven assists in 48 NCAA games.

Will Horcoff, University of Michigan

The freshman forward played two seasons for USA Hockey's National Team Development Program Under-18 team before enrolling at Michigan. He scored in his debut, a 4-3 loss to Ohio State at Wrigley Field on Jan. 3.

Shawn Horcoff, a Michigan State alum, is assistant GM of the Detroit Red Wings. He played 1,008 games for the Edmonton Oilers, Dallas Stars and Anaheim Ducks.

Jack Hughes, Boston University

After two seasons at Northeastern, the forward (no relation to the Devils center or his brothers, New Jersey defenseman Luke Hughes and Vancouver Canucks captain Quinn Hughes) is in his second with the Terriers. The second-round pick (No. 51) of the Los Angeles Kings in the 2022 NHL Draft has 13 points (three goals, 10 assists) in 23 games.

His father is Canadiens GM Kent Hughes, a Division III All-American at Middlebury College.

Shane Lachance, Boston University

The forward and first sophomore captain in school history has 21 points (seven goals, 14 assists) in 23 games. He was selected by the Oilers in the sixth round (No. 186) of the 2021 NHL Draft.

Scott Lachance is head of U.S. scouting for the Devils and a son-in-law of Jack Parker, who won 897 games and three NCAA championships as BU coach. He played 819 games for the Islanders, Canadiens, Canucks and Blue Jackets.

Gabe Perreault, Boston College

Known for his high-end skill and hockey sense, the sophomore forward played on the top line for the United States team that won a second straight gold medal at the 2025 IIHF World Junior Championship. He leads Boston College with 31 points (eight goals, 23 assists) in 23 games and was selected by the New York Rangers in the first round (No. 23) of the 2023 NHL Draft.

Yanic Perreault played 859 games for the Maple Leafs, Kings, Canadiens, Predators, Phoenix Coyotes and Blackhawks.

Max and Zam Plante, University of Minnesota Duluth

Max, 18, and Zam, 20, are freshmen forwards. Zam has 15 points (four goals, 11 assists) in 24 games. Max has 14 (six goals, eight assists) in 11 games. The Red Wings chose Max in the second round (No. 47) of the 2024 NHL Draft. The Penguins selected Zam in the fifth round (No. 150) of the 2022 draft.

Derek Plante is a Blackhawks assistant coach. He played 450 games for the Buffalo Sabres, Stars, Chicago and Philadelphia Flyers.

Ryan St. Louis, Brown University; Lucas St. Louis, Harvard University

Ryan and Lucas are the sons of Canadiens coach Martin St. Louis, an All-American at Vermont University and member of the Hockey Hall of Fame who played 1,134 NHL games for the Flames, Lightning and Rangers.

Ryan, a junior forward, has 13 points (five goals, eight assists) in 10 games. He scored twice in Brown's 5-2 win against Stonehill College on Sunday and led the Bears in scoring last season with 24 points (13 goals, 11 assists) in 30 games.

Lucas is a freshman defenseman with five points (one goal, four assists) in 19 games.

Jimmy Snuggerud, University of Minnesota

The junior forward has been one of the most prolific scorers in college hockey the past three seasons. Snuggerud ranks second in the NCAA with 37 points (18 goals, 19 assists) in 28 games. He was taken by the St. Louis Blues in the first round (No. 23) of the 2022 draft.

Dave Snuggerud played for the United States at the 1988 Calgary Olympics and 265 NHL games for the Sabres, San Jose Sharks and Flyers.
