Kane, Hagel both net hat tricks in an 8-5 victory

CHICAGO --Patrick Kane and Brandon Hagel each scored a hat trick for the Chicago Blackhawks in an 8-5 win against the New Jersey Devils at United Center on Friday.

Alex DeBrincat and Seth Jones each had three assists, and Kevin Lankinen, playing his first game since Jan. 22 because of a hand injury, made 31 saves for Chicago (19-26-8), which had lost seven straight at home.
"I think we had a similar situation earlier this year where he had two and I had two as well, and we were going to see who was going to get the third one first against [the] Ottawa [Senators on Nov. 1]," Kane said. "I ended up getting that one first, so kind of a similar situation tonight, but nice to see him get a hat trick. That's pretty special."

NJD@CHI: Kane nets 2 PPG, empty netter for hat trick

Jesper Bratt scored twice, Jonas Siegenthaler and Jack Hughes each had a goal and two assists, and Jon Gillies made 29 saves for the Devils (18-29-5), who defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 6-1 on Thursday.
"We made mistakes you just can't make," New Jersey coach Lindy Ruff said. "If you want to use the third period, we tie the game and give up the odd-numbered rushes. Back-to-back games where you know you've got some fatigue in your game, you've got to make them earn it, and we didn't make them earn it."
Ryan Carpenter gave the Blackhawks a 6-4 lead at 14:45 of the third period before Bratt brought the Devils within 6-5 at 15:45.
Kane completed his eighth NHL hat trick into an empty net to make it 7-5 at 18:37, and Hagel scored an empty-net goal at 19:32 for his first NHL hat trick and an 8-5 final.
"Yeah, that's nice," Hagel said. "No better way to do it than on my 100th game. It felt good. Got that one out of the way so now I'm going for four."

NJD@CHI: Hagel collects 2nd hat trick of the game

Hagel gave the Blackhawks a 1-0 lead at 7:34 of the first period. Devils defenseman Ty Smith lost the puck in the right circle and Hagel scored on a wrist shot.
Hughes tied it at 1-1 at 9:41. Ryan Graves got the puck on the left-wing boards and passed it to Hughes, who scored from the left circle. It was his fourth goal in five games.
Yegor Sharangovich put the Devils ahead 2-1 at 18:55 when he scored from the slot to extend his NHL career-high point streak to six games (nine points; four goals, five assists).
Chicago scored three straight power-play goals to take a 5-2 lead.
Kane tied it 2-2 at 1:34 of the second period and made it 3-2 at 11:24 before Hagel pushed the lead to a 4-2 at 14:09. DeBrincat had an assist on each to become the third Blackhawks player to have three power-play assists in one period since 1933-34 (Kane, Jan. 9, 2018; Chris Chelios, April 4, 1993).
Bratt brought the Devils to within 4-3 at 17:43 when he scored on a breakaway.
"I felt we let off the gas a little bit," Bratt said. "I think we felt the game probably was going to be too simple. If you compare that game to what we played [Thursday], I felt Thursday was a way more complete game. We were faster to pucks. We were quicker in the D-zone. We didn't pinch in the wrong situations. We didn't give up almost any 2-on-1s. I feel those were things we were lacking today."

NJD@CHI: Bratt buries a breakaway off of a nice pass

Siegenthaler tied the game at 4-4 at 8:36 of the third period with a wrist shot from the left-wing boards. It was his first goal in two seasons with the Devils (60 games) and first in 95 games, since Dec. 20, 2019, with the Washington Capitals.
"It feels good; it's been a while," Siegenthaler said. "I'm happy, but it's not the same if you lose."
Kirby Dach scored on a backhand at 14:04 for a 5-4 Chicago lead.
"It was huge," Blackhawks coach Derek King said. "That was real big. I think just for the fans. I mean, we're competing, we're trying and it just wasn't working, and then it was an exciting game. Got the fans out of their seats. Great to see [Lankinen] hang in there and survive it and get us a win. We had contributions from a lot of bodies."
