Hamilton will be placed on injured reserve retroactive to Sunday, when he was taken to a hospital after getting hit with a deflected puck 7:05 into the first period of a 4-3 overtime win at the Washington Capitals.
Center Nico Hischier also did not play at the Boston Bruins on Tuesday because of a lower-body injury. Goalie Jonathan Bernier had right hip surgery Monday and will be out for the season.
New Jersey, which had won three straight games, was tied for sixth in the Metropolitan Division with the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Hamilton, who agreed to a seven-year, $63 million contract ($9 million average annual value) with the Devils on July 29, scored 20 points (seven goals, 13 assists) and was third on New Jersey in blocked shots (47), averaging 21:25 of ice time in 30 games this season.
Defenseman Christian Jaros replaced Hamilton in the lineup.
Hamilton and Hischier (20 points; six goals, 14 assists) were tied for third in scoring for New Jersey, behind forwards Jesper Bratt (29 points; nine goals, 20 assists) and Andreas Johnsson (21 points; nine goals, 12 assists).
Bernier was 4-4-1 with a 3.06 goals-against average and .902 save percentage this season. He has not played since allowing six goals on 32 shots through two periods in an 8-4 loss at the Winnipeg Jets on Dec. 3. He is one of six goalies to have played for the Devils this season.
