"That game is on me," Kinkaid said. "I couldn't make a save. I have to make those big saves. I was a little off; maybe that's from not playing but there's no excuses, I just have to be better."
Tavares scored a power-play goal 26 seconds into the third period to give the Islanders a 5-3 lead before Chimera scored off a slap shot from the right circle 34 seconds later.
Hall scored a power-play goal at 8:37 to pull the Devils within 6-4.
The Islanders and Devils combined for five goals in the second period when New York took a 4-3 lead.
Cizikas scored at 2:44, Strome at 9:32, and Ladd shorthanded at 11:59 to make it 4-1. The Devils pulled to within one on goals by Palmieri at 13:21 and Blandisi at 17:55.
"These were two of the more physical games we've had all year," Islanders coach Doug Weight said. "I felt we played better on Saturday, but so did the Devils. We had some big plays at the right times from guys. It was physical and it was hard hockey. There will be ice bags after this weekend."
The Devils took a 1-0 lead when Wood scored a power-play goal off a tic-tac-toe passing play with Palmieri and Hall 9:15 into the first. Strome tied it on a shot from the slot at 14:33.
