Devils, Kraken celebrate gender equality with special warmups

The New Jersey Devils and the Seattle Kraken are celebrating girl power.

Both teams wore special warmup jerseys in honor of gender equality before their games on Tuesday.
Danielle Cartier, a local New Jersey artist, designed the Devils' sweaters.
New Jersey's warmups featured a colorful collage design which represented how gender is constructed.

"Working on this project has been an overall amazing experience," Cartier

"I am thrilled to be able to translate my style and artwork into a design that supports gender equality."
The Devils also walked in with Girls Learn to Play participants before their game against the Maple Leafs at the Prudential Center.

Seattle had their own festivities for their Women in Hockey Night during their game against the Anaheim Ducks at Climate Pledge Arena.
The Kraken's warmups featured a butterfly in the shape of a "S" as the crest of their logo and Seattle's state flower, a rhododendron, on the shoulder patches.

Erin Wallace, a local Seattle illustrator, designed the jerseys.
"There's never going to be one way to display or represent women," Wallace
told the Kraken.
"I could think feminine-strong like a bird of prey, but I wanted to take obviously feminine in this stereotypical way and subvert it in a playful way. That's why I chose to draw a butterfly ... in my research, I came across folklore across the world, like a swarm of butterflies would often be seen as an omen. It's mythical like the Kraken."
