Islanders win Trotz debut in OT against Hurricanes

RALEIGH, N.C.-- Josh Bailey scored a power-play goal 43 seconds into overtime to give the New York Islanders a 2-1 win against the Carolina Hurricanes at PNC Arena on Thursday in the season opener for each team.

"We were trying to get it set up as quick as we can," said Bailey, who one-timed a pass from Mathew Barzal. "We knew we had the better part of two minutes, just not rush anything. I'm happy we got it done."
The Islanders earned the power play when Micheal Ferland tripped Barzal with four seconds left in the third period.

Thomas Greiss made 45 saves for New York, who won their first game under new coach Barry Trotz.
"He gave us a chance all night," Trotz said of Greiss. "I was hoping he would get a shutout. He played that well."
Carolina was playing its first game for coach Rod Brind'Amour. The Hurricanes outshot the Islanders 46-20.

"I thought we created offense," Brind'Amour said. "We had a few turnovers in our own end, (but) I think if we play that way every night, we will have a good chance."
Jordan Staal tied it 1-1 with 1:35 remaining in the third period when he deflected Dougie Hamilton's shot from the right point.

"[Hamilton] has a great release, and we were fortunate enough to get a good bounce after (almost) 50 shots," Staal said. "We'll take the point."
Valtteri Filppula made it 1-0 when he faked a shot from the left circle then slipped a low shot between Petr Mrazek's pads at 9:27 of the second period.
Mrazek, making his Carolina debut, made 18 saves. Hurricanes forward Andrei Svechnikov, the No. 2 pick in the 2018 NHL Draft, had three shots in 11:48 of his NHL debut.
Greiss made 45 saves in a 3-0 shutout at Carolina last season on Feb. 16.
"He has those nights when you can tell he's feeling it and he's tracking the puck really well," Islanders forward Cal Clutterbuck said. "It took the better part of 58 minutes and a crazy bounce to beat him. You've got to tip your hat to him."

Bailey was held out of the morning skate with lower-back stiffness. ... Greiss hosted about 100 campers from the Thomas Greiss Hockey Camp in Fort Bragg, North Carolina, an annual week-long camp he runs in July. ... Staal won 19 of 27 face-offs and had game highs in shots (seven) and hits (eight). ... Trotz coached the Washington Capitals for four seasons and won the Stanley Cup last season. Brind'Amour, who played in the NHL for 20 seasons, including 10 with Carolina, was a Hurricanes assistant for seven seasons.
