Husso's shutout was his second this season and fifth in the NHL.
"The guys did a great job in front of me today, they made my life easy again," said Husso, who is 5-1-1 in seven starts this season. "They do all the big things, and I just have to focus on keeping out any goals."
Dominik Kubalik had a goal and an assist for Detroit (6-3-2), which was without forwards Tyler Bertuzzi (two),
Jakub Vrana
(two) and Robby Fabbri (none), who have combined to play four games this season.
"If you had told me we would be sitting where we are right now with the players we're missing, I would have told you there's no way," Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde said. "It's about our players and their commitment to their teammates."
Semyon Varlamov made 22 saves for the New York (7-5-0), which was shutout for the first time this season. Ilya Sorokin, who played the final 8:13 of the second period after Varlamov briefly left following a collision, allowed one goal on two shots.
"Give them credit, they did a good job of taking away time and space, but I didn't think we played fast enough, and there's no excuse for that," Islanders coach Lane Lambert said. "We had 30 shot attempts in the first two periods and finished with 63, 33 in the third period. Clearly, we weren't doing enough in the first 40 minutes."
Lucas Raymond gave the Red Wings a 1-0 lead at 6:29 of the second period, finishing a cross-slot pass from Kubalik on a 5-on-3 power play.
