Lehner celebrates one year of sobriety by posting heartfelt message

It was a big weekend for New York Islanders goalie both personally and professionally.

While his team clinched home ice for an Eastern Conference First Round matchup with the Pittsburgh Penguins, the 27-year-old also reached 1-year sober.
He shared the news in a heartfelt message on his official Twitter account.

Lehner, a veteran of nine seasons who signed with the Islanders in July,
detailed his personal battles
before the start of this season.
Lehner said back in September that he struggled with drug and alcohol addiction and had suicidal thoughts while dealing with mental health issues that led to a diagnosis of bipolar 1 with manic phases.
Since the diagnosis, the goalie has thrived. He posted a 2.13 goals against average while winning a career-best 25 games, both career bests.
In the message, Lehner handed out thank yous to his wife, family, friends and Islanders teammates.
"Now 1 year sober going in to the playoffs with this group is something that I could only have dreamed of 1 year ago. One day at a time. Let's do this," Lehner wrote.
