Flyers edge Islanders to end 10-game slide

PHILADELPHIA -- Kevin Hayes scored two goals, and the Philadelphia Flyers ended a 10-game slide with a 3-1 victory against the New York Islanders at Wells Fargo Center on Tuesday.

Travis Sanheim also scored, and Lukas Sedlak had two assists for Philadelphia (8-10-5), which was 0-7-3 in its previous 10. Carter Hart made 23 saves.
"It's no fun when you're losing every night, but I do think that there's games that we deserved to win in that streak and there's definitely games we deserved to lose," Hayes said. "Tonight, I think everyone gave a full 60 (minute) effort right from the first face-off, and I think everyone's pretty happy that we won and ended it."

Noah Dobson scored for New York (15-9-0), which had its four-game winning streak end. Ilya Sorokin made 30 saves.
"I just don't think we generated enough," Islanders forward Matt Martin said. "Struggled to break out, struggled to sustain pressure and struggled to hold onto the puck. I don't love our chances when you struggle in all those areas."
Dobson scored with a one-timer during a 5-on-3 power play to give New York a 1-0 lead at 3:12 of the first period.
"We talked about it before we played them," New York coach Lane Lambert said. "They're a structured team, take away time and space, and we didn't do enough to create opportunities for ourselves."
Sanheim tied it 1-1 with a short-handed goal at 4:37, chipping in the puck in the slot after Noah Cates' centering pass to Sedlak on a rush was broken up by the stick of Islanders defenseman Ryan Pulock.
"His goal was huge," Flyers forward Nicolas Deslauriers said. "You don't always think you're going to score on the penalty kill. We've been struggling lately on killing the [first] 1:50 and then the last 10 seconds, that's when they bite us. ... We're not a team that scores a lot of goals, but getting it on the PK kind of boosts us up."

Hayes put the Flyers ahead 2-1 at 9:45 of the first. Sedlak won a face-off in the left circle to Hayes, who beat Sorokin over his glove with a quick wrist shot.
Hayes was playing on a line with Sedlak and Joel Farabee for the second straight game. In the Flyers' 5-2 loss at the Islanders on Saturday, Hayes had two assists, Sedlak had a goal and an assist, and Farabee scored.
"I love playing with 'Beezer,'" Hayes said. "I've played with him for a while. ... 'Sedsy' hounds the puck and tries to get it to us and enjoys doing that, so it's a good combination."
Hayes scored an empty-net goal with 34 seconds remaining for the 3-1 final.
Philadelphia outshot New York 12-7 in the third, a period in which it had been outscored 29-18 entering the game.
"That's one of our more complete games," Flyers coach John Tortorella said. "We talked about between the second and third in the coach's room that we need to finish a game now. We make it harder on ourselves with undisciplined penalties toward the end, but we have a really great penalty kill there, Carter makes a couple of big saves, and we find our way. ... That's a really good stepping stone for us in understanding how to finish games.
"Are all our problems solved? Absolutely not. But I'm glad for them because they have played hard and they have not been rewarded. You have to do more to win in this league. We did tonight."
NOTES:Islanders forward Josh Bailey took warmups but missed the game because of an upper-body injury, and forward Cal Clutterbuck left the game with 4:01 remaining in the first period because of an undisclosed injury. Lambert did not have an update on either player after the game. ... Islanders forward Brock Nelson, who was playing in his 700th NHL game, had an assist. ... It was Sanheim's first short-handed NHL goal. ... Flyers forward Scott Laughton had three shots and one hit in 18:42 of ice time in his return after missing four games because of an upper-body injury. ... Philadelphia defenseman Tony DeAngelo did not play because of a lower-body injury. Tortorella did not have an update postgame.
