The 28-year-old center could have become an unrestricted free agent after this season.
"I'm super, super stoked to get it done, and to be able to just stay here in New York and be part of this team," Zibanejad said Monday. "There were a lot of discussions going back and forth. When I got presented this offer, I was happy with it. Overall, I think it's a good deal for me. I love it and I think it's a good feel for the Rangers as well. I think they're happy as well, otherwise they wouldn't offer me that. So I'm sure both sides are really happy and happy it's done and happy that we can move on."
Zibanejad is in the final season of the five-year contract he signed with New York on July 25, 2017. He and the Rangers had been in talks about a long-term extension with the goal that it would be finalized this season, which New York will begin at the Washington Capitals on Wednesday (7:30 p.m. ET; TNT).
"Since joining the team in 2016, Mika has emerged as one of the premier players in the NHL," Rangers general manager Chris Drury said. "In addition to being a great player on the ice, Mika is an exemplary person off of the ice. We are fortunate to have him as part of our Rangers organization and are excited that he will continue his career in New York."
Acquired in a trade with the Ottawa Senators for forward Derick Brassard on July 18, 2016, Zibanejad is the Rangers leader in goals (95), assists (104), points (199), shots on goal (615) and games (195) since the start of the 2018-19 season. He scored 50 points (24 goals, 26 assists) in 56 games last season.
"We're really happy to have him and we just want him doing the same thing he's done," coach Gerard Gallant said. "Just because you get a big contract you don't have to be any different. He got the contract because of the way he played, and that's what we need from him and we know we're going to get that.
"Power play, penalty kill, he can do it all for the New York Rangers. I said he's a top player in our league and he got taken care of as a top player. We're really happy to have them for the next nine years."
Zibanejad was named an alternate captain Monday along with forwards Artemi Panarin, Chris Kreider, Ryan Strome and Barclay Goodrow and defenseman Jacob Trouba. The Rangers have not had a captain since Ryan McDonagh was traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Feb. 26, 2018.
"We've had four [alternates] over the last few years and I liked it," Zibanejad said. "I don't mind that at all. We have great leaders. We've had great leaders in this locker room and then we added some more guys to that leadership group, and I feel really good. Everyone contributes and just as a team, I feel like that's something good and that's obviously something that coach wanted and what he feels comfortable with and so do we."
