Schultz scores twice, lifts Kraken past Rangers in OT

SEATTLE -- Justin Schultz scored his second goal of the game at 3:39 of overtime to give the Seattle Kraken a 3-2 win against the New York Rangers at Climate Pledge Arena on Thursday.

Jordan Eberle carried the puck down the left side in front to draw New York goalie Igor Shesterkin over, then passed across to Schultz, who scored the game-winner.
"'Ebs' just did a great job driving them wide and I kind of got lost a little bit," Schultz said. "I just hoped it would come out to me and found a way to get in there."
It was the second overtime win in Kraken history, and the first at home. Seattle lost its previous three overtime games this season.
"We practiced 3-on-3 yesterday and the day before," Kraken forward Jared McCann said. "So, you know, it was huge. We felt more confident going into it. We made some plays, but we were smart. … Don't need to force it. Hold on to it, puck possession, you know, the time of the game. Got to just hold on to it. Make the right play and wait for your chances."

Martin Jones made 28 saves for the Kraken (9-5-3), who are 2-1-1 on a five-game homestand.
Vincent Trocheck tied it with 1:54 left in the third period, and Shesterkin made 29 saves for the Rangers (8-6-4) in the opener of a four-game road trip.
"First period was great, second period was awful, and the third period was pretty even," New York coach Gerard Gallant said. "There was some good stuff, but there was some bad stuff in the second period that we got away from what we did in the first period."

Schultz put the Kraken ahead 2-1 at 9:27 of the third. Andre Burakovsky circled with the puck before sending it to Schultz, whose shot from the point deflected off Rangers defenseman Braden Schneider and past Shesterkin.
After Carson Soucy took a hooking penalty at 17:04, Trocheck tied it on a power play when he put a rebound past Jones to make it 2-2.
McCann tipped a Will Borgen shot from the point at 2:45 of the first period to give Seattle a 1-0 lead.
"I feel like we've been getting off to good starts all year and just continued that tonight," Schultz said. "That's a good team over there, I've played them a lot the last few years, and [they have] like a lot of skill and our team did a good job all night battling through. It wasn't going our way and just finding a way to get two points. 'Jonesy' was huge again in net and is giving us a chance to win every night."
Mika Zibanejad tied it 1-1 with a power-play goal at 14:58 after Chris Kreider found him with a cross-crease pass.
"[Shesterkin] made some good saves, some key saves, especially in that second period when it was 1-1," Gallant said. "He kept us in the game, and we found a way at the end to get us one point. It's not good enough, we're better than that."
NOTES: Gallant coached his 100th game with the Rangers. He has the most wins of any Rangers coach (60) through the first 100 games. … New York defenseman Adam Fox has an eight-game point streak (11 points; three goals, eight assists). … Kraken forward Yanni Gourde played his 400th NHL game. Schultz joins defenseman Adam Larsson as the only two Kraken players to score an overtime goal. … Schultz is the third Seattle defenseman with a multigoal game, joining Soucy and Haydn Fleury.
