NHL Buzz: Marchessault expected back for Golden Knights against Kings

Vegas Golden Knights

Jonathan Marchessault is expected to play against the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday (10 p.m. ET; ATTSN-RM, BSW ESPN+, SN NOW).
"We're looking at tomorrow," Vegas coach Bruce Cassidy said Friday. "I anticipate like Jack (Eichel) and Paul (Cotter) now that he's in a normal color (jersey), going in the normal line, full rushes, everything, full participant that he certainly has an opportunity to play tomorrow."
Marchessault has missed six games with a lower-body injury. He practiced earlier in the week in a blue noncontact jersey before wearing a full participant jersey Thursday.
"I feel pretty good. I've done everything I could do to come back to the lineup," said Marchessault, who has 27 points (14 goals, 13 assists) in 35 games. "We'll see how I feel tomorrow. I'm definitely trending in the right direction."
Defenseman Alec Martinez was also a full participant in practice Friday, but his status for Saturday is unknown. He has missed four games with a lower-body injury.
"He skated today. That's awesome," Cassidy said. "Could he play tomorrow? I'll check with the trainers. He's missed some time. If you think of it, we don't play again until next Thursday, so the extra time could benefit him." -- Paul Delos Santos

Minnesota Wild

Brandon Duhaime returned for the Wild against the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday.
The forward missed 18 games with an upper-body injury he sustained against the Winnipeg Jets on Nov. 23.
"It's probably one of the worst things, seeing your team play without you," Duhaime said. "Whether you're in the stands or in the lineup, it's always fun to be in the locker room, be a part of it, but when you're not involved like that, it's tough."
Duhaime will play on a line with Frederick Gaudreau and Ryan Hartman. He has four points (three goals, one assist) in 14 games this season.
"We talked the other day about how he was arguably one of our best players when he got hurt," coach Dean Evason said. "Scoring, physical, skating, just doing all the right things and playing the right way. He's had a real good few weeks of practice and he's ready to go. I know his teammates were excited yesterday … so we're happy to have him back."
Mats Zuccarello did not play against the Sabres and also won't dress against the St. Louis Blues on Sunday because of an upper-body injury. The forward is second on the Wild with 40 points (16 goals, 24 assists) in 37 games.
Matt Boldy, who has 29 points (12 goals, 17 assists) in 37 games this season, will take Zuccarello's spot on the top line alongside Kirill Kaprizov and Sam Steel.
"We already talked to 'Bolds' about that," Evason said. "He's not 'Zuccy,' nobody is. … For sure [Zuccarello] is a big part of our offensive scheme, power play and obviously our offensive play, but we all play the same way. No one's going to take up that offensive production but certainly everybody can still do the same things and the right things." -- Heather Engel

Chicago Blackhawks

Patrick Kane was out with a lower-body injury for the Blackhawks when they defeated the Arizona Coyotes 2-0 on Friday.
"I feel like, to be honest with you, I probably could play but it's just certain situations it's kind of lingering pain, so it is what it is right now," the forward said Friday. "But I think I should be through it here quick enough."
It was the first time Kane missed a game due to injury since he sustained a broken clavicle against the Florida Panthers on Feb. 24, 2015, and missed the rest of that regular season.
Kane said he sustained the injury after taking a hit from San Jose Sharks forward Evgeny Svechnikov in Chicago's 5-2 loss on Sunday. He participated in the skate Tuesday and played 12:57 with two shots on goal in two periods in a 4-1 loss against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
"He thought he could make it through [last game] and he doesn't want to put the team that position again," Blackhawks coach Luke Richardson said. "It was trying to pull nails out of an old log. He just didn't want to say he couldn't go, but that's an athlete in him.
"We have one more day tomorrow and see how he is for the next game (against the Calgary Flames) on Sunday, then we have a few days. I think it's smart to do that."
Kane leads the Blackhawks with 27 points (seven goals, 20 assists) in 37 games. -- Tracey Myers

New York Islanders

Mathew Barzal did not play for the Islanders in a 4-1 loss at the Calgary Flames because of a lower-body injury.
The forward participated in warmups Friday before the team announced he was day to day.
Barzal has a five-game goal streak, including in New York's 4-2 loss at the Edmonton Oilers on Thursday. He leads the Islanders with 41 points (11 goals, 30 assists) in 40 games.
"There was a tweak [Thursday] night and he tried it in warmup and couldn't go," New York coach Lane Lambert said.

Winnipeg Jets

Blake Wheeler, Nikolaj Ehlers, Cole Perfetti and Nate Schmidt returned for the Jets in their 4-2 win against the Lightning on Friday.
Wheeler, Ehlers and Perfetti, each a forward, and Schmidt, a defenseman, practiced Thursday and participated in an optional skate Friday.
"To get four guys back is ridiculous, really," defenseman Josh Morrissey said. "You never see that. And the guys that are coming back and what they mean to our team. There's a huge excitement level for us. We've done a good job of weathering injuries and adversity throughout the season so far. The guys that have come in have done a fantastic job. But to get these guys back is super exciting. And there's definitely a buzz around the room."
Wheeler missed nine games and hadn't played since Dec. 15, and had surgery for a groin injury a few days later. He has 26 points (nine goals, 17 assists) in 30 games this season.
"We got the news yesterday that he was cleared to play which was shocking to all of us," Bowness said Thursday. "That just goes back to his character, his commitment to the team, and his will to play. He loves to play. He works hard every day. Give him a lot of credit, he pushed the envelope, and he's back sooner than we thought, which is great news for all of us."
Ehlers, who has three assists in three games this season, hadn't played since Oct. 17 because of sports hernia surgery. Perfetti (six goals, 14 assists in 34 games) missed five games with a shoulder injury, and Schmidt (three goals, three assists in 30 games) missed nine with an upper-body injury.
"The guys are excited to be back playing again," Schmidt said. "You inject a lot of energy back into the room, which is always something that when you get into January and February you're going to need. You get a little extra something from a few of the guys." -- Darrin Bauming

Montreal Canadiens

Brendan Gallagher will be out at least two weeks for the Canadiens because of a lower-body injury.
The forward did not play in a 4-1 loss to the New York Rangers on Thursday because of the same lower-body injury that recently sidelined him for 13 games.
Gallagher had one goal in three games since he returned to the lineup prior to not playing Thursday. He has nine points (four goals, five assists) in 25 games this season.
Defenseman Kaiden Guhle will be out at least eight weeks because of a lower-body injury. He has not played since he was injured in a 7-2 loss to the Florida Panthers on Dec. 29.
Defenseman Mike Matheson (lower body) and Sean Monahan (lower body) each skated Friday but will be out at least two more weeks. Matheson hasn't played since Dec. 17; Monahan last played Dec. 5.
The Canadiens are 0-6-1 during a season-long, seven-game skid and have one win in their past 11 games (1-9-1).
