Neither Matthews, taken No. 1 in the 2016 NHL Draft by Toronto, nor Laine, selected with the No. 2 pick in 2016 by Winnipeg, hit the scoresheet at Bell MTS Place, but each of the six goals in the game was scored by a player chosen in the first round. Toronto got goals by forwards Kasperi Kapanen (2014), Tyler Ennis (2008), Nazem Kadri (2009) and John Tavares (2009). Winnipeg's goals were scored by forwards Nikolaj Ehlers (2014) and Mark Scheifele (2011).
The Toronto-Winnipeg game was the seventh this season when at least six different first-round picks scored goals. The highest such combination in NHL history is 10, set in Winnipeg's 9-8 victory against the Philadelphia Flyers on Oct. 27, 2011.

Kapanen opened the scoring with an unassisted goal at 14:38 of the first period. He has nine points (five goals, four assists) in 10 games this season after he had nine points (seven goals, two assists) in 38 games for Toronto in 2017-18. Among players selected in the 2014 NHL Draft, only Boston Bruins forward David Pastrnak has more points this season with 15 (10 goals, five assists).
In all, 23 of the 30 players selected in the first round in 2014 have played at least one game this season. That's tied with the 2013 and 2015 drafts for the most players who've played in at least one NHL game this season.
The victory kept the Maple Leafs perfect on the road this season (5-0-0). It's the third time in their history that they have won their first five road games; they were 7-0-0 in 1940-41 and 5-0-0 in 1993-94. The last team to start 6-0-0 on the road was the Colorado Avalanche in 2013-14. The NHL record for road wins to start a season is 10, set by the Buffalo Sabres in 2006-07.
The loss ended Winnipeg's regular-season home point streak at 15 games (14-0-1).
