Jeff Skinner scored the overtime winner for the second time in three games to lift the Buffalo Sabres to their 10th consecutive victory by defeating the San Jose Sharks 3-2 at KeyBank Center on Tuesday.

The Sabres (17-6-2) moved into first place past the Tampa Bay Lightning and Nashville Predators (each 17-7-1) and matched their longest winning streak since entering the NHL in 1970. Buffalo won 10 in a row in 1983-84 and again in 2006-07.
Nine of the 10 wins have been by one goal, and seven have been decided in overtime or a shootout. The only other team in NHL history to have as many one-goal victories as part of a winning streak of at least 10 games was the Pittsburgh Penguins, who won nine one-goal games during a 15-game run from March 2-30, 2013.
The goal was Skinner's 19th of the season, moving the Buffalo forward into a tie for the NHL lead with forwards Patrik Laine of the Winnipeg Jets and David Pastrnak of the Boston Bruins. Goalie Carter Hutton is 8-0-0 in his past eight decisions, allowing two or fewer goals in six of those games.

Golden Knights set team record for goals

The second-year Vegas Golden Knights had the best offensive game in their history, defeating the Chicago Blackhawks 8-3 at United Center. Center Cody Eakin and defenseman Shea Theodore each scored two goals and had an assist for Vegas, which won its fourth straight game and set a team single-game record for goals.
The Golden Knights, who defeated the Sharks 6-0 on Saturday, are the fourth team this season to score at least six goals in back-to-back games. The others: the Washington Capitals (Oct. 3-4), Toronto Maple Leafs (Oct. 7-9), Penguins (Oct. 23-25) and Calgary Flames (Nov. 19-21). Vegas is the second team in four days and the 10th this season to score at least eight goals in a game.

MacKinnon, Rantanen power Avalanche

Linemates Nathan MacKinnon (two goals) and Mikko Rantanen (two assists) helped the Colorado Avalanche win their fifth straight game and end an 11-game regular-season losing streak against the Predators with a 3-2 win at Bridgestone Arena.
Rantanen leads the NHL with 40 points (10 goals, 30 assists) in 24 games. It's the fewest games needed by an Avalanche player to reach 40 points since the team relocated from Quebec to Colorado in 1995. Three players reached 40 points in fewer team games before the move: Michel Goulet (41 points in 20 games, 1987-88), Peter Stastny (40 points in 21 games, 1987-88) and Marian Stastny (40 points in 22 games, 1982-83).
MacKinnon, Rantanen and left wing Gabriel Landeskog have combined for 103 points (41 goals, 62 assists) though Colorado's first 24 games. They are the first three players to reach 100 points through a team's first 24 games of a season since Daniel Alfredsson, Dany Heatley and Jason Spezza did so with the Ottawa Senators in 2005-06 (101 points; 40 goals, 61 assists in 19 games).

Comebacks continue

The Senators and Arizona Coyotes each rallied from two goals down in the third period to end their respective four-game losing streaks. It was the sixth and seventh time this season that a team has come back from down multiple goals in the third period to win in regulation. The Senators are the only team to do so more than once; they trailed 4-2 after two periods at the Lightning on Nov. 10 but won 6-4.
Rookie forward Brady Tkachuk scored twice before Matt Duchene's game-winning goal with 2:59 remaining in the third period to rally the Senators past the Philadelphia Flyers 4-3 at Wells Fargo Center. Tkachuk has 16 points (nine goals, seven assists) in 14 games. Senators rookies have combined for an NHL high 53 points (26 goals, 27 assists) in 25 games this season. It's the fourth time in the past 10 years that a team has gotten at least 50 points from rookies in its first 25 games. The Bruins and New Jersey Devils did it last season, as did the Maple Leafs in 2016-17.
The Senators won after trailing 3-1 midway through the third period. It was the third time in their history that they rallied from down multiple goals in the final 10 minutes of the third period to win in regulation. They also accomplished the feat on March 23, 1994 (against the Detroit Red Wings) and March 25, 2008 (at Buffalo).
Forward Josh Archibald scored two third-period goals for the Coyotes, who rallied to defeat the Minnesota Wild 4-3 at Xcel Energy Center. Despite taking 14 shots on goal, the fewest by any team in a game this season, the Coyotes came back from down multiple goals in the third to win in regulation for the fourth time since relocating to Arizona from Winnipeg in 1996. The others: Nov. 28, 1999 (at Detroit); April 14, 2002 (vs. Nashville) and Feb. 26, 2017 (vs. Buffalo).
