To commemorate Juneteenth, which marks the end of slavery in the United States on June 19, 1865, the NHL on Friday launched Committing to Change.

"Today, we are proud to launch Committing to Change, a resource hub for the entire hockey community to learn more about the issues we face and our ability to take action to support the Black community and combat injustice," NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said. "The information in this guide is a starting point on which we will continue to expand. We hope that our Clubs, Players, partners, and fans view this guide as a long-term resource to fight inequality wherever it exists."

The site highlights three fundamental stages that should resonate for all change-makers: awareness, allyship and advocacy.

"The past few weeks have been a critical moment for the world, and the hockey community in particular, to reflect more deeply on our capacity to advocate for racial justice," said Kim Davis, NHL executive VP social impact, growth initiatives and legislative affairs. "This guide is part of our ongoing efforts to ensure the current moment transforms into a true moment, where our players, team executives, fans, and youth hockey families become active agents for change."

Demonstrations opposing racial injustice have been held worldwide following the death of George Floyd, a black man who died in custody of the Minneapolis Police Department on May 25. The incident, captured on video, sparked demonstrations worldwide and prompted NHL executives, players and clubs to speak out.
