Unsigned veteran players can earn a contract with an NHL team by impressing enough in training camp and during the preseason on a professional tryout contract (PTO).
The following notable players (listed alphabetically) will be in an NHL camp on a PTO with the listed team:

Alex Chiasson, F, Edmonton Oilers

Chiasson, who turns 28 on Oct. 1, earned a one-year contract from the Washington Capitals after signing a PTO with them before training camp last year. He had 18 points (nine goals, nine assists) in 61 games and two points in 16 Stanley Cup Playoff games to help the Capitals win the Cup. A second-round pick (No. 38) by the Dallas Stars in the 2009 NHL Draft, he has 124 points (59 goals, 65 assists) in 381 games for the Capitals, Stars, Ottawa Senators and Calgary Flames.

Brandon Davidson, D, Chicago Blackhawks

The 27-year-old played 51 games for the Oilers, Montreal Canadiens and New York Islanders last season. Davidson has 22 points (nine goals, 12 assists) and a minus-13 rating in 152 games for the Oilers, Canadiens and Islanders.
Davidson agreed to terms on a one-year contract with the Blackhawks on Sept. 27.

Simon Despres, D, Montreal Canadiens

The 27-year-old has not played in the NHL since Oct. 13, 2016. After being traded from the Pittsburgh Penguins to the Anaheim Ducks on March 2, 2015, Despres was limited to 49 games in three seasons with Anaheim because of concussions. He had 11 points (four goals, seven assists) and was minus-13 in 44 games for HC Slovan Bratislava in the Kontinental Hockey League last season. In 193 games with the Ducks and Penguins, who selected him in the first round (No. 30) of the 2009 NHL Draft, he had 43 points (six goals, 37 assists), a plus-31 rating and 440 hits.

Emerson Etem, F, Los Angeles Kings

A native of Southern California, the 26-year-old played last season with Tucson of the American Hockey League (four goals, one assist in 16 games) and HC Lugano of the Swiss National League (no points in five games). Etem, who was selected by Anaheim in the first round (No. 29) of the 2010 NHL Draft, has 46 points (22 goals, 24 assists) in 173 games with the Ducks, Vancouver Canucks and New York Rangers.

Justin Falk, D, Calgary Flames

The 29-year-old had two points (one goal, one assist) in 46 games for the Buffalo Sabres last season. Selected by the Minnesota Wild in the fourth round (No. 110) in the 2007 NHL Draft, Falk has 33 points (three goals, 30 assists) in 269 NHL games with the Wild, Rangers, Columbus Blue Jackets and Sabres.

Mark Fayne, D, Boston Bruins

The 31-year-old last played in the NHL on Dec. 6, 2016, his fourth game of the season for the Oilers, who had signed him to a four-year contract July 1, 2014. Fayne had 17 points (four goals, 13 assists) and was minus-26 in 147 games with Edmonton after playing his first four NHL seasons with New Jersey.
Fayne was released from his tryout contract Sept. 19.

Jason Garrison, D, Edmonton Oilers

The 33-year-old played eight games for the Vegas Golden Knights after being selected from the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 2017 NHL Expansion Draft. He played 58 games with Chicago of the AHL. Garrison has 159 points (48 goals, 111 assists) and is plus-35 in 538 games with the Golden Knights, Lightning, Canucks and Florida Panthers.

Stephen Gionta, F, New York Islanders

Gionta, who turns 35 on Oct. 9, has not played in the NHL since the 2016-17 season, when he had six points (one goal, five assists) in 26 games with the Islanders. He had five points (two goals, three assists) in 30 games for Bridgeport of the AHL last season. Undrafted out of Boston College, Gionta has 56 points (16 goals, 40 assists) in 296 regular-season games with the Devils and Islanders, and seven points (three goals, four assists) in 24 playoff games.

Jeff Glass, G, Calgary Flames

Glass made his NHL debut with the Chicago Blackhawks on Dec. 29, 2017, at the age of 32, and went 3-7-3 with a 3.36 goals-against average and .898 save percentage in 15 games.
Glass was released from his tryout contract Sept. 26.

Jussi Jokinen, F, Detroit Red Wings

The 35-year-old had 17 points (five goals, 12 assists) in 60 games last season, when he played for four teams (Oilers, Kings, Blue Jackets and Canucks). He had an NHL career-high 42 assists with the Panthers in 2015-16.
Jokinen was released from his tryout contract Sept. 30.

Mark Letestu, F, Florida Panthers

The 33-year-old had 23 points (nine goals, 14 assists) in 80 games with the Blue Jackets and Oilers last season and did not have a point in six playoff games with Columbus. He has won 52.1 percent of face-offs in his NHL career, including 53.3 percent in 2017-18.
Letestu was released from his tryout contract Sept. 24.

Luca Sbisa, D, New York Islanders

The 28-year-old had two goals and 12 assists in 30 games last season after being selected by the Golden Knights from the Canucks in the expansion draft. He had four assists in 12 playoff games. Selected by the Philadelphia Flyers in the first round (No. 19) of the 2008 NHL Draft, Sbisa has 102 points (18 goals, 84 assists) and is minus-19 in 495 games with Philadelphia, Vancouver and Vegas.
Sbisa signed a one-year contract with the Islanders on Sept. 24.

Denis Seidenberg, D, New York Islaneders

The 37-year-old had five assists in 38 games for the Islanders last season, his second playing with New York on a one-year contract. Seidenberg has 251 points (44 goals, 207 assists) in 859 games with the Islanders, Flyers, Phoenix Coyotes, Carolina Hurricanes and Boston Bruins. He won the Stanley Cup with the Bruins in 2011.

Logan Shaw, F, Calgary Flames

Shaw, who turns 26 on Oct. 5, had 14 points (four goals, 10 assists) in 72 games for the Ducks and Canadiens last season. Montreal did not extend him a qualifying offer, making him an unrestricted free agent. He has 31 points (12 goals, 19 assists) in 180 games with the Canadiens, Ducks and Panthers.
Shaw was released from his tryout contract Sept. 26.

Jack Skille, F, Ottawa Senators

The 31-year-old has not played in the NHL since the 2016-17 season, when he had five goals and four assists in 55 games for the Canucks. He had 25 points (11 goals, 14 assists) in 41 games with Dinamo Minsk of the KHL last season. Selected by Chicago in the first round (No. 7) of the 2005 NHL Draft, Skille has 84 points (43 goals, 41 assists) in 368 NHL games with the Blackhawks, Panthers, Blue Jackets, Canucks and Colorado Avalanche.
Skille was released from his tryout contract Sept. 23.

Drew Stafford, F, New Jersey Devils

The 32-year-old had 15 points (eight goals, seven assists) in 59 games with the Devils last season. Selected by the Buffalo Sabres in the first round (No. 13) of the 2004 NHL Draft, Stafford has 415 points (191 goals, 224 assists) in 784 games with the Sabres, Devils, Bruins and Winnipeg Jets. He had NHL career highs in goals (31) and points (52) with Buffalo in 2010-11.

Lee Stempniak, F, Boston Bruins

Stempniak signed a one-year contract with New Jersey after attending Devils training camp and playing in the preseason on a PTO in 2015. He had 51 points (19 goals, 32 assists) in 2015-16 with the Devils and Bruins before signing a two-year contract with the Hurricanes on July 1, 2016. The 35-year-old had 49 points (19 goals, 30 assists) in 119 games for Carolina the past two seasons.

Viktor Svedberg, D, Calgary Flames

The 27-year-old has not played in the NHL since April 9, 2016, spending the past two seasons with the Blackhawks' AHL affiliate in Rockford. The defenseman (6-foot-8, 238 pounds) had two goals and two assists in 27 games for Chicago, all in 2015-16.
Svedberg was released from his tryout contract Sept. 26.

Scottie Upshall, F, Edmonton Oilers

Upshall, who turns 35 on Oct. 7, will be in an NHL training camp on a PTO for the second straight year. He earned a one-year contract with the St. Louis Blues last season after turning down an invitation to attend Canucks camp to instead try out with the Blues, who he played for the previous two seasons. Selected by the Nashville Predators in the first round (No. 6) of the 2002 NHL Draft, he has 285 points (138 goals, 147 assists) in 759 games with the Blues, Panthers, Coyotes, Blue Jackets, Flyers and Predators.
Upshall was released from his tryout contract Sept. 24.

Joel Ward, F, Montreal Canadiens

Ward, 37, had 12 points (five goals, seven assists) in 52 games with the San Jose Sharks last season, but was scratched from the Sharks' 10 Stanley Cup Playoff games. He has 304 points (133 goals, 171 assists) in 726 regular-season games with the Minnesota Wild, Nashville Predators, Washington Capitals and Sharks, and 52 points (30 goals, 22 assists) in 83 playoff games.
Ward was released from his tryout contract Sept. 25.

Daniel Winnik, F, Boston Bruins

The 33-year-old will be in an NHL training camp on a PTO for the second straight year. He earned a one-year contract with the Minnesota Wild last season, when he had 23 points (six goals, 17 assists) in 81 games and one assist in five playoff games. Winnik has 251 points (82 goals, 169 assists) in 798 games with the Wild, Capitals, Penguins, Ducks, Coyotes, Avalanche, Toronto Maple Leafs and San Jose Sharks.
