Super 16: Bruins, Hurricanes make big jump; Lightning stay at No. 1

The surging Boston Bruins and Carolina Hurricanes each made the biggest jumps in NHL.com's weekly Super 16 power rankings.

The Bruins and Hurricanes each moved up three spots; Boston to No. 2 after a shootout loss against the St. Louis Blues and a win against the San Jose Sharks since the Super 16 came out last Thursday, and Carolina to No. 12 after going 3-0-0 in the past week.
The Tampa Bay Lightning kept their firm hold on the top spot and the Calgary Flames remained at No. 3, but the San Jose Sharks, Winnipeg Jets and New York Islanders each dropped two spots to No. 4, 6 and 8, respectively.
The Toronto Maple Leafs moved up two spots to No. 5.
To create the power rankings, each of the 13 staff members puts together his or her version of what they think the Super 16 should look like. Those are submitted and a point total is assigned to each.
The team picked first is given 16 points, second gets 15, third gets 14 and so on down to No. 16, which gets one point.
Here is latest Super 16:

1. Tampa Bay Lightning (49-11-4)

Total points: 208
Last week: No. 1
Hit: Nikita Kucherov has 23 points (eight goals, 15 assists) in his past nine games and leads the NHL with 104 points (30 goals, 74 assists) in 64 games.
Miss: Nothing.

2. Boston Bruins (37-17-9)

Total points: 182
Last week: No. 5
Hit: The Bruins have points in 14 consecutive games, going 10-0-4 since Jan. 29.
Miss: They're without injured forward David Pastrnak (thumb) and defenseman Kevan Miller (upper body).

3. Calgary Flames (41-16-7)

Total points: 181
Last week: No. 3
Hit: The Flames have won seven games in a row and lead the San Jose Sharks by seven points for first place in the Pacific Division.
Miss: James Neal has missed seven consecutive games with an upper-body injury. The forward was injured in a game at the Florida Panthers on Feb. 14.

4. San Jose Sharks (37-19-8)

Total points: 172
Last week: No. 2
Hit: The Sharks are home for 12 of their final 18 games this season. They are 19-5-5 at SAP Center.
Miss: Erik Karlsson might have to miss more time because of a nagging groin injury. The defenseman, who has missed 10 of 15 games since Jan. 19, didn't play after the second period in San Jose's 4-1 loss to Boston on Tuesday.

5. Toronto Maple Leafs (39-20-4)

Total points: 140
Last week: No. 7
Hit: John Tavares will make his return to Long Island to play his former team, the New York Islanders, at Nassau Coliseum on Thursday as the leading goal-scorer for his new team with 36 goals. The center never scored more than 38 goals in his nine seasons with the Islanders.
Miss: Nazem Kadri has missed four straight games with a concussion the center sustained in a 3-2 overtime loss against the Blues on Feb. 19.

6. Winnipeg Jets (37-22-4)

Total points: 137
Last week: No. 4
Hit:Patrik Laine is heating up again. The right wing has four goals in the past three games, including at least one in each, after going 15 straight games without a goal and scoring two in 28 games from Dec. 16-Feb. 20.
Miss: Josh Morrissey will be out until at least April with an upper-body injury the defenseman sustained in a 4-1 loss against the Arizona Coyotes on Sunday. Morrissey has 31 points (six goals, 25 assists) in 59 games and is fourth on the Jets with an average of 22:24 of ice time per game.

7. Nashville Predators (37-24-5)

Total points: 130
Last week: No. 8
Hit:Mikael Granlund will join the Predators on Thursday in time for their game at the Jets on Friday. The forward, acquired from the Wild on Monday for forward Kevin Fiala, remained in Minnesota for the birth of his son and didn't play in Nashville's 2-0 loss against the St. Louis Blues on Tuesday. The Predators play in Minnesota on Sunday.
Miss: The Predators have scored four goals in their past four games, including getting shut out by Central Division opponents (Colorado Avalanche, St. Louis), and their power play, last in the NHL (12.2 percent), is 2-for-33 (6.1 percent) in nine games since Feb. 10.

8. New York Islanders (36-19-7)

Total points: 123
Last week: No. 6
Hit:Casey Cizikas, the Islanders' fourth-line center, has a career-high 17 goals, including five in the past seven games. He had previously never scored more than nine in a season.
Miss: The Islanders have lost three of their past four games (1-2-1) and have fallen into a points tie (79) for first place in the Metropolitan Division with the Washington Capitals, but the Islanders have two games in hand.

9. Washington Capitals (36-21-7)

Total points:113
Last week: No. 9
Hit: Alex Ovechkin has 10 points (six goals, four assists) in a seven-game point streak and Washington has won four of its past five games.
Miss:The Capitals are last in the NHL in face-off percentage (45.9 percent).

10. St. Louis Blues (34-23-6)

Total points: 101
Last week: No. 10
Hit:Jordan Binnington's five shutouts are the most by a rookie goalie in Blues history. He is also the fourth goalie in NHL history to win each of his first seven regular-season home starts, joining Frank McCool of the Maple Leafs (8-0-0 in 1944-45), Ken Dryden of the Montreal Canadiens (8-0-0 in 1970-71) and Wayne Thomas of the Canadiens (7-0-0 in 1972-73). The Blues went 12-1-1 in February.
Miss: Forwards Brayden Schenn and David Perron have each been out with upper-body injuries. Schenn has missed four straight games and Perron has missed 17 in a row. However, they each practiced Wednesday and could play at the Carolina Hurricanes on Friday.

11. Pittsburgh Penguins (33-22-8)

Total points: 61
Last week: No. 11
Hit: Jared McCann has five goals in 13 games since the Penguins acquired him from the Florida Panthers on Feb. 1. The forward, who scored two goals in a 5-2 win against the Blue Jackets on Tuesday, had eight goals in 46 games with the Panthers.
Miss: Defensemen Kris Letang (upper body), Brian Dumoulin (concussion), Olli Maatta (shoulder) and Chad Ruhwedel (upper body) are all unlikely to play at the Buffalo Sabres on Friday. Forward Bryan Rust (lower body) is also out.

12. Carolina Hurricanes (34-23-6)

Total points: 60
Last week: No. 15
Hit:Jordan Staal has four assists in two games, including three in a 6-1 win against the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday, since returning from a concussion that forced the center to miss 32 of 34 games from Dec. 7-Feb. 21.
Miss: There really isn't much to nitpick at with the Hurricanes. They've won three in a row, six of seven and 14 of 20 (14-5-1) since Jan. 10.

13. Vegas Golden Knights (33-26-5)

Total points:52
Last week: No. 13
Hit: Mark Stone made his debut with the Golden Knights on Tuesday after being acquired from the Ottawa Senators in a trade Monday. He didn't have a point, but he had six shots on goal and was credited with three takeaways in a 4-1 win against the Dallas Stars.
Miss: The win against Dallas was Vegas' second in eight games (2-5-1) since Feb. 9. The Golden Knights are 6-11-1 and 6-for-51 on the power play (11.8 percent) since Jan. 10. The Arizona Coyotes trail them by six points for third in the Pacific Division.

14. Montreal Canadiens (34-23-7)

Total points: 49
Last week:No. 12
Hit:The Canadiens are hoping an 8-1 win against the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday, when Max Domi had five points (two goals, three assists), Jonathan Drouin ended a seven-game point drought by getting four assists and Andrew Shaw had a hat trick, is the start of a good stretch. The Canadiens had lost two in a row and five of their previous seven games in regulation.
Miss:The Canadiens are 1-for-19 (5.3 percent) on the power play in their past eight games and they've had two games in which they didn't even draw a power-play opportunity. They are 30th in the League on the power play at 12.7 percent.

15. Columbus Blue Jackets (35-24-3)

Total points: 40
Last week: No. 14
Hit: Adding Matt Duchene and Ryan Dzingel before the trade deadline means the Blue Jackets now have a League-high six forwards who have scored at least 20 goals this season: Cam Atkinson (35), Duchene (28), Artemi Panarin (24), Pierre-Luc Dubois (23), Josh Andersen (22) and Dzingel (22).
Miss: Ryan Murray has missed four consecutive games with an upper-body injury. The defenseman is on injured reserve.

16. Minnesota Wild (31-27-6)

Total points: 10
Last week: NR
Hit: The Wild have won four games in a row and have allowed six goals in the process, including just two at even strength.
Miss: They have allowed at least one power-play goal against in nine straight games, going 67.6 percent (23-of-34).
