Oct. 5: NHL Preseason Roundup

David Pastrnak had a goal and two assists for the Boston Bruins in his preseason debut, a 5-4 win against the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden in New York on Wednesday.

Pavel Zacha had a goal and two assists, and David Krejci and Mike Reilly each had a goal and an assist for the Bruins. Jeremy Swayman made 28 saves.
Mika Zibanejad and Kaapo Kakko each scored twice, and Jaroslav Halak made 21 saves for the Rangers.
Halak started in place of Igor Shesterkin, who was scheduled to play the entire game but sat out with a stomach issue.
Zibanejad gave New York a 1-0 lead 27 seconds into the first period when he scored from a sharp angle off Chris Kreider's pass across the crease.
Jake DeBrusk tied it 1-1 at 2:27 after getting to a loose puck near the top of the crease.
Zibanejad put the Rangers back in front 2-1 on the power play with a redirection in the slot at 18:08, and Kakko extended the lead to 3-1 on a breakaway with 45 seconds left.
Zacha cut it to 3-2 on a breakaway at 36 seconds of the second period after stealing the puck in the neutral zone.
Pastrnak tied it 3-3 at 8:09 on a one-timer from low in the left face-off circle, then fed Krejci for a go-ahead goal on the rush at 15:46.
Kakko tied it 4-4 at 6:49 of the third period when he knocked the puck across the goal line after Libor Hajek's shot trickled past Swayman.
Reilly scored at 12:10 with a shot from the right circle for the 5-4 final.
Capitals 4, Red Wings 2:Alex Ovechkin had his first goal and assist of the preseason to help the Washington Capitals to a 4-2 win against the Detroit Red Wings at Capital One Arena in Washington.
Ovechkin scored into an empty net with 54 seconds left in the third period. Connor Brown scored from the right circle at 17:33 of the third, 18 seconds into a power play to give the Capitals a 3-2 lead.
Darcy Kuemper made 31 saves for Washington.
Tyler Bertuzzi and Michael Rasmussen each had a goal and an assist for Detroit. Ville Husso made 31 saves.
Bertuzzi scored a power-play goal from the right side of the net at 8:09 of the first period to give the Red Wings a 1-0 lead. Connor McMichael scored from the slot on a pass from Ovechkin on a delayed penalty with 23 seconds left in the first to tie it 1-1.
Rasmussen scored on a 2-on-1 off a pass from Bertuzzi at 7:42 of the second period to give Detroit a 2-1 lead. Nick Jensen tied it 2-2 on a shot from the right point at 13:45.
Capitals forward T.J. Oshie left the game because of an upper-body injury with five minutes left in the second period after he was checked into the boards. He didn't practice Thursday and is day to day.

Jets 5, Flames 0: David Rittich made 37 saves when the Winnipeg Jets shut out the Calgary Flames 5-0 at Canada Life Centre in Winnipeg.
Nikolaj Ehlers had a goal and two assists and Kyle Connor scored twice for Winnipeg. Rittich also had an assist.
Dan Vladar made 13 saves on 15 shots in 29:10 for Calgary. Dustin Wolf made nine saves in relief.
The Jets scored four goals in the second period. Connor made it 1-0 on the power play at 8:28, and Mark Scheifele extended the lead to 2-0 at 9:12 when he redirected a shot by Ehlers.
Dominic Toninato made it 3-0 at 12:53 on a breakaway out of the penalty box. Connor scored his second goal in front after a backhand pass from Ehlers at 18:51 for a 4-0 lead.
Ehlers scored a power-play goal at 10:47 of the third period for the 5-0 final.
Avalanche 2, Stars 1:Mikko Rantanen scored the go-ahead goal with 2:18 left in the third period to give the Colorado Avalanche a 2-1 win against the Dallas Stars at Ball Arena in Denver.
Logan O'Connor also scored in the third for the Avalanche. Alexandar Georgiev made 32 saves, including 18 in the first period.
Riley Damiani scored for the Stars. Scott Wedgewood saved all 18 shots he faced through the first two periods, and Anton Khudobin made 13 saves in the third.
Damiani gave Dallas a 1-0 lead at 4:27 of the second period with a wrist shot from the slot.
O'Connor tied it 1-1 at 12:36 of the third after Khudobin was unable to poke check the puck away from the crease, and Rantanen one-timed a pass from Samuel Girard for the 2-1 final.

Canucks 5, Oilers 4: Elias Pettersson scored twice on the power play for the Vancouver Canucks in a 5-4 win against the Edmonton Oilers at Abbotsford Centre in Abbotsford, British Columbia.
Conor Garland had a goal and an assist, and Bo Horvat, Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Quinn Hughes each had two assists for the Canucks. Spencer Martin made 17 saves.
Connor McDavid had a goal and an assist, and Markus Niemelainen had two assists for the Oilers. Stuart Skinner made 26 saves.
Nils Hoglander gave Vancouver a 1-0 lead at 17:14 of the first period on a rebound after Ekman-Larsson's slap shot hit the post.
McDavid tied it 1-1 at 7:05 of the second period when he skated into the Canucks zone with the puck, eluded Hughes in the right circle and roofed a shot over Martin's glove.
Zach Hyman scored on a short-handed breakaway at 14:03 to give Edmonton a 2-1 lead, but Tanner Pearson tied it 2-2 for Vancouver 1:07 later with a power-play goal at 15:10.
Garland gave the Canucks a 3-2 lead at 1:52 of the third period, but
James Hamblin
tied it with a short-handed goal at 2:20.
Pettersson scored a power-play goal at 3:58 to give Vancouver a 4-3 lead, but Ryan Nugent-Hopkins tied it 4-4 at 6:16.
Pettersson's second power-play goal gave the Canucks a 5-4 lead at 9:45.
