Tyler Wong
scored a hat trick to lift the Vegas Golden Knights to a 9-4 win against the Vancouver Canucks in their NHL debut at Rogers Place on Sunday.
Wong, who scored the first goal in Golden Knights history 4:58 into the first period, also had an assist in the expansion team's preseason opener.

Wong, 21, skated in alone on the power play after a nice chip pass from Cody Glass, who was selected with the No. 6 pick in the 2017 NHL Draft, and beat goalie Richard Bachman with a quick fake and a backhand high over the glove to put Vegas ahead 1-0.

Wong, who signed in May with the Chicago Wolves, Vegas' American Hockey League affiliate, as an undrafted free agent after he had 109 points (51 goals, 58 assists) in 69 games for Lethbridge of the Western Hockey League last season, scored his second goal on a rebound at the side of the net with 2:30 left in the first period to make it 4-2. The 5-foot-9 forward completed his hat trick 6:56 into the third period when he scored for a 6-3 lead.
Tomas Hyka scored twice, and Tomas Nosek, Alex Tuch, Nick Suzuki and Paul Thompson each had a goal in the Vegas debut. Rookie Dylan Ferguson, 18, made 29 saves for the Golden Knights, who dressed nine players with NHL experience but left most of their expected inaugural roster at home.

Brock Boeser scored twice, and Jordan Subban and Philip Holm each had a goal for the Canucks, who were playing their second preseason game in as many days. Vancouver was missing most of its veterans after they left earlier in the day for two preseason games against the Los Angeles Kings at the 2017 NHL China Games presented by O.R.G. Packaging.

Tavares sends Islanders past Flyers in OT

John Tavares scored his second goal of the game 34 seconds into overtime to give the New York Islanders a 3-2 win against the Philadelphia Flyers at NYCB Live, Home of the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum on Sunday in the preseason opener for each team.
Tavares skated in alone from the right faceoff circle into the slot and beat Flyers goalie Leland Irving with a wrist shot.

Mathew Barzal also scored for New York. Kristers Gudlevskis started in goal and allowed two goals on 16 shots. He was relieved midway through the second period by Christopher Gibson, who made 14 saves.
Mike Vecchione and Jori Lehtera scored in the second period for Philadelphia. Goalie Alex Lyon played the first two periods and made 19 saves. Irving allowed two goals on nine shots.
Vecchione gave the Flyers a 1-0 lead 40 seconds into the second when he redirected Shayne Gostisbehere's shot past Gudlevskis. Lehtera also had an assist.
Lehtera made it 2-0 with a shorthanded goal 8:43 into the period. Lehtera chipped the puck past Islanders defenseman Ryan Pulock at the Flyers blue line, skated in alone and beat Gudlevskis with a backhand shot.

Tavares made it 2-1 with a power-play goal at 10:01 of the second. Jordan Eberle and Anders Lee had the assists.
Barzal tied it 2-2 with 14:37 remaining when he put a wrist shot from the right circle past Irving.
It was the Islanders' first game at Nassau Coliseum since Game 6 of the Eastern Conference First Round against the Washington Capitals in the 2015 Stanley Cup Playoffs. They moved to Barclays Center in Brooklyn prior to the start of the 2015-16 season.
