MUNICH -- Munich native JJ Peterka scored in his homecoming game, and the Buffalo Sabres defeated EHC Red Bull Munchen 5-0 in the 2024 NHL Global Series Challenge Germany presented by Fastenal at SAP Garden on Friday before a sellout crowd of 10,796.

Tage Thompson had a goal and an assist, and Sam Lafferty, Dylan Cozens and Jack Quinn also scored for Buffalo. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen made eight saves in 31:32 before he was replaced by Devon Levi, who made four saves.

The Sabres don't play again until Oct. 4, when they open the regular season with the first of two games in two nights against the New Jersey Devils in the 2024 NHL Global Series Czechia presented by Fastenal at O2 Arena in Prague.

Lafferty gave Buffalo a 1-0 lead at 7:46 of the first period. His pass attempt to Rasmus Dahlin deflected off Red Bull forward Viet Oswald high in the zone and went into the net past goalie Mathias Niederberger.

Thompson made it 2-0 at 15:14, when he skated out of the left face-off circle to the front of the net and deflected Henri Jokiharju's floating wrist shot from the left point.

Cozens scored a power-play goal to make it 3-0 at 13:41 of the second period.

Quinn's goal at 17:29 made it 4-0. He won a race to the puck in the right circle, stayed on his skates despite nearly being pulled down from behind by Red Bull defenseman Jakob Weber, and roofed a quick snap shot past Niederberger.

Peterka extended Buffalo's lead to 5-0 at 3:48 of the third period, when he scored from the right circle with a wrist shot inside the right post.

Peterka is from Munich and lives here in the offseason. He played for Red Bull from 2019-21 and trained with the team this summer. He said he would have as many as 45 family members and friends in the stands for the game. -- Dan Rosen, senior writer

Wild 8, Jets 5: Joel Eriksson Ek had two goals and three assists for the Minnesota Wild (2-1-0), who scored seven goals in the second period of their win against the Winnipeg Jets at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Kirill Kaprizov had two goals and Mats Zuccarello had a goal and an assist for Minnesota. Ben Jones, Liam Ohgren and Marat Khusnutdinov also scored for the Wild. Marc-Andre Fleury made 36 saves.

Cole Perfetti had a goal and an assist and Mason Appleton, Nikita Chibrikov, Brayden Yager and Morgan Barron scored for Winnipeg. Connor Hellebuyck gave up eight goals on 29 shots through two periods before Thomas Milic came on and made six saves in the third period.

Kaprizov gave the Wild a 1-0 lead on a power-play goal just 1:32 into the game.

Perfetti evened the score on a power-play goal at 10:13.

Jones put Minnesota back ahead with a short-handed goal at 2:07 of the second period, but Appleton tied the game at 4:32.

Eriksson Ek's wrist shot at 6:05 gave the Wild the lead again and was quickly followed by Zucarello's goal at 7:11 and Ohgren's score at 8:33 before Eriksson Ek's second goal of the period made it 6-2 for Minnesota at 12:29.

Kaprizov's second goal of the game at 17:36 and Khusnutdinov's score at 19:28 put the Wild up 8-2 after two periods.

Chibrikov scored for Winnipeg at 5:46 of the third period and Yager scored at 17:24. Barron's goal just 62 seconds later made it an 8-5 final.

Stars 4, Avalanche 2: Matt Duchene had two goals and an assist for the Dallas Stars in their win against the Colorado Avalanche at American Airlines Center in Dallas.

Tyler Seguin had a goal and two assists for Dallas (4-0-0). Jake Oettinger stopped 14 of 16 shots in two periods. Ben Kraws made seven saves in relief.

Alexandar Georgiev made 14 saves on 16 shots in 31:04 for Colorado (0-2-0). Kevin Mandolese stopped nine of 10 shots.

Duchene gave Dallas a 1-0 lead at 4:50 of the first period.

Ivan Ivan tied it 1-1 for Colorado on the power play at 3:08 of the second period.

Seguin gave the Stars a 2-1 lead at 4:12. Parker Kelly tied it 2-2 at 7:26.

Duchene gave the Stars a 3-2 lead 38 seconds into the third period.

Kole Lind scored into an empty net at 18:28 for the 4-2 final.

Blue Jackets 8, Capitals 4: Adam Fantilli scored three goals and Mathieu Olivier scored twice for Columbus in its victory at Capital One Arena in Washington. James Malatesta, Mikael Pyyhtia and Cole Sillinger (empty net) also scored for the Blue Jackets (2-1-1).

Alex Ovechkin, Jakub Vrana, Dylan Strome and Jakob Chychrun scored for the Capitals (1-3-0).

Ovechkin scored his first goal of the preseason on a right circle shot to give Washington a 1-0 lead at 6:58 of the first period. Fantilli scored from the left circle to tie it at 10:47 and Malatesta finished a breakaway at 13:49 of the first to give Columbus a 2-1 lead.

Vrana scored from the left circle 12 seconds later to tie the score at 2-2. The Blue Jackets outscored the Capitals 3-1 in the second period with goals from Olivier (2:50), Fantilli (5:25) and Pyyhtia (14:49) to take a 5-3 lead into the third. Chychrun’s goal at 11:43 of the third period got Washington within 5-4 before Fantilli completed his hat trick from in front at 16:00.

Daniil Tarasov stopped 14 of 17 shots in the first two periods for the Blue Jackets, and Pavel Cajan made six saves in relief. Charlie Lindgren went the distance in net for the Capitals and made 19 saves.

Hurricanes 8, Panthers 2: Seth Jarvis scored two goals and Sean Walker had three points for the Carolina Hurricanes in a win against the Florida Panthers at Lenovo Center.

William Carrier had a goal and an assist, and Sebastian Aho, Jalen Chatfield, Brent Burns and Shayne Gostisbehere each had two assists for the Hurricanes (2-0-0). Frederik Andersen made 15 saves.

Oliver Okuliar and A.J. Greer scored, and Mike Benning had two assists for the Panthers (0-2-0). Spencer Knight allowed six goals and made 15 saves through two periods. Cooper Black made seven saves in relief.

The Hurricanes took a 1-0 lead on a delayed penalty at 6:59 of the first period. Knight stopped Gostisbehere’s shot from between the face-off circles, but Josiah Slavin tapped in the rebound near the crease.

Carolina went up 2-0 at 4:02 of the second period when Jarvis made a toe-drag in front of Florida defenseman Tobias Bjornfot and scored on a wrist shot from the slot.

Walker scored on a one-timer from the right circle to push the lead to 3-0 with a power-play goal at 9:20. Jarvis made it 4-0 when he tipped Walker’s shot at 11:52. Carrier fed a pass through the slot to Jordan Staal for a back-door tap in for a 5-0 lead at 15:55.

Okuliar skated to the slot and tipped Benning’s shot past Anderson to make it 5-1 at 16:33.

Jack Roslovic’s power-play goal made it 6-1 at 19:38.

Greer scored on a wrist shot through traffic to make it 6-2 at 4:02 of the third period.

Red Wings 2, Blackhawks 0: Alex Lyon and Cam Talbot combined for 22 saves as the Detroit Red Wings shut out the Chicago Blackhawks at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit.

Lyon turned back all 13 shots he faced through two periods before Talbot made nine saves in the third period.

Christian Fischer and Vladimir Tarasenko scored for Detroit (2-0-0). Andrew Copp had two assists.

Fischer gave the Red Wings a 1-0 lead on a backhand at 4:10 of the second period and Tarasenko's power-play goal made it 2-0 at 12:32.

Arvid Soderblom made 29 saves for the Blackhawks (0-2-0).

Islanders 5, Devils 1: Fredrik Karlstrom had a goal and an assist for the New York Islanders in their win against the New Jersey Devils at UBS Arena in Elmont, New York.

Semyon Varlamov made 16 saves on 17 shots in two periods for New York. Jakub Skarek made eight saves in the third period. Dennis Cholowski had two assists.

Timo Meier scored for the Devils. Jake Allen allowed five goals on 17 shots.

Karlstrom made it 1-0 Islanders with a power-play goal at 2:19 of the first period. Kyle MacLean made it 2-0 at 9:23 and Bo Horvat scored on the power play at 19:44 for a 3-0 Islanders lead.

Liam Foudy gave the Islanders a 4-0 lead 2:23 into the second period.

Meier scored on the power play for the Devils at 8:17 to make it 4-1.

Oliver Wahlstrom scored at 12:19 for the 5-1 final.

Kraken 3, Canucks 1: Joey Daccord made 19 saves as the Seattle Kraken beat the Vancouver Canucks at Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle.

Eeli Tolvanen, Brandon Montour and Ryan Winterton scored for Seattle (1-2-0).

Tyler Myers scored for Vancouver (2-1-0). Kevin Lankinen made 17 saves.

Tolvanen tipped in Adam Larsson's shot at 4:02 of the first period to put Seattle up 1-0 and Montour's shot from just inside the blue line deflected off Vancouver's Derek Forbort for a 2-0 lead at 18:41.

Winterton scored at 3:45 of the second period, tapping in a rebound after Lleyton Roed's shot bounced off his skate for a 3-0 lead.

Myers tucked in a wrap-around goal at 16:18 to make it 3-1.

Golden Knights 5, Utah 2: Jack Eichel had a goal and two assists, and Alex Pietrangelo had a goal and an assist for the Vegas Golden Knights in their win against the Utah Hockey Club at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Victor Olofsson had an assist in his preseason debut for Vegas (2-1-0). The forward signed a one-year contract on July 2.

Adin Hill made 14 saves for Vegas.

Matt Villalta made nine saves in playing the first 30:56 for Utah (2-1-0). Jaxson Stauber allowed five goals on 17 shots.

Michael Carcone scored on the power play at 7:43 of the second period to give Utah a 1-0 lead.

Pietrangelo tied it 1-1 for Vegas with a power-play goal at 14:02.

Ryan McGregor gave Utah a 2-1 lead with a goal at 16:46.
