Sept. 28: NHL Preseason Roundup

Auston Matthews had a goal and two assists for the Toronto Maple Leafs in a 5-0 preseason win against the Detroit Red Wings at Scotiabank Arena on Saturday.

John Tavares had a goal and an assist, and Tyson Barrie had two assists for Toronto. The Maple Leafs scored four goals in the second period, none at even strength: Trevor Moore scored shorthanded, and William Nylander, Matthews and Tavares scored on the power play.
Frederik Andersen made 16 saves for Toronto, which finished the preseason 5-3-0.
Jimmy Howard made 24 saves on 29 shots, and Filip Larsson made three saves in relief for Detroit, which finished the preseason 3-3-3.
The Maple Leafs open the regular season against the Ottawa Senators on Oct. 2.
The Red Wings open the regular season at the Nashville Predators on Oct. 5.

Crosby injured in Penguins win against Sabres

Sidney Crosby did not finish a 3-2 preseason shootout loss by the Pittsburgh Penguins against the Buffalo Sabres at KeyBank Center.
Crosby played 6:42 in the first period but did not play the final two periods. He attended a QMJHL jersey retirement ceremony in Rimouski, Quebec on Friday.
Pittsburgh forward Bryan Rust left the game after he was injured in the third period.
"They both got hit with shots," Penguins coach Mike Sullivan said. "They are being evaluated now. We will probably have more definitive answers tomorrow morning."
Pittsburgh opens the regular season against Buffalo on Oct. 3.
Rust and Patric Hornqvist each scored a second-period goal to give Pittsburgh a 2-0 lead. Matt Murray made 28 saves for the Penguins, who finished the preseason 2-1-3.
Casey Mittelstadt ended the shootout with a goal in the sixth round for Buffalo. Zemgus Girgensons tied it 2-2 with 8:33 left in the third period, Marco Scandella scored, and Linus Ullmark made 34 saves for the Sabres, who finished the preseason 4-2-0 under new coach Ralph Krueger.

Rieder, Lucic score against Oilers in Flames win

Tobias Rieder and Milan Lucic combined to score three goals against their former team, helping the Calgary Flames defeat the Edmonton Oilers 3-2 in a preseason game at Scotiabank Saddledome.
Rieder broke a tie with his second goal at 14:21 of the third period when TJ Brodie's shot from the top of the slot deflected in off him. Rieder, with the Flames on a tryout, and Lucic played for the Oilers last season.
Gaetan Hass and Zack Kassian scored, and Joakim Nygard had two assists for Edmonton, which ended the preseason 3-4-0. Mikko Koskinen made 19 saves.
David Rittich made 26 saves for Calgary, which ended the preseason 4-3-1.
The Flames open the regular season at the Colorado Avalanche on Oct. 3.
The Oilers open the regular season at the Vancouver Canucks on Oct. 2.

Bruins get two hat tricks against Blackhawks

Jake DeBrusk and David Pastrnak each scored a hat trick for the Boston Bruins in an 8-2 preseason win against the Chicago Blackhawks at TD Garden on Saturday.
Charlie Coyle and Karson Kuhlman scored, and Torey Krug had three assists for Boston, which finished the preseason without a regulation loss (4-0-2). Tuukka Rask made 19 saves.
Philipp Kurashev and Tim Soderlund scored, Kevin Lankinen made 13 saves on 18 shots, and Matt Tomkins made nine saves on 12 shots for Chicago.
Almost all of the Blackhawks regulars are in Germany preparing for a 2019 NHL Global Series exhibition game Sunday.
Chicago opens the regular season against the Philadelphia Flyers on Oct. 4 in the Czech Republic.
Boston opens at the Dallas Stars on Oct. 4.

Trocheck scores only goal, Panthers defeat Lightning

Vincent Trocheck scored in the shootout to give the Florida Panthers a 1-0 preseason win against the Tampa Bay Lightning at Amalie Arena.
Sergei Bobrovsky made 26 saves and three in the shootout for the Panthers, who finished the preseason 3-4-1.
Andrei Vasilevskiy made 28 saves for the Lightning, who finished the preseason 2-3-2.
Lightning forwards Cedric Paquette and Tyler Johnson each left the game in the first period after getting injured.
Paquette left the arena with his right arm in a sling, and Tampa Bay coach Jon Cooper said that Johnson's status for the season opener was not known.
"[Cedric] definitely is going to get checked out in a little bit here," Cooper said. "[Johnson] was a little bit more for precaution. We'll have more of an update tomorrow but Cedric is going to be a little bit of a battle if he's going to be available right away."
Tampa Bay hosts Florida in the regular-season opener Oct. 3.

Barzal gives Islanders win against Rangers

Mathew Barzal and Adam Pelech scored in the final 2:20 of the third period to give the New York Islanders a 4-2 preseason win against the New York Rangers at Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport, Connecticut.
Michael Dal Colle (first period) and Josh Bailey (third period) scored power-play goals for the Islanders, who finished the preseason 5-2-0.
Vladislav Namestnikov (first period) and Tony DeAngelo (third period) scored for the Rangers, who finished the preseason 2-4-0.
The Islanders open the regular season against the Washington Capitals on Oct. 4.
The Rangers open the regular season against the Winnipeg Jets on Oct. 3.

Suzuki gives Canadiens OT win against Senators

scored with 56 seconds remaining in overtime to give the Montreal Canadiens a 4-3 preseason win against the Ottawa Senators at Bell Centre.
Suzuki beat Senators defenseman Jean-Gabriel Pageau to the puck along the end boards and scored on a wraparound.
Phillip Danault and Brendan Gallagher each had a goal and an assist, and Tomas Tatar scored for the Canadiens, who finished the preseason 5-2-0.
Anthony Duclair had a goal and an assist, and Bobby Ryan and Filip Chlapik scored for the Senators, who finished the preseason 3-2-1.
Carey Price made 34 saves for Montreal, which opens the regular season at the Carolina Hurricanes on Oct. 3.
Anders Nilsson made 30 saves for Ottawa, which opens the regular season at the Toronto Maple Leafs on Oct. 2.

Stars rally for shootout win against Avalanche

The Dallas Stars rallied for a 4-3 shootout preseason win against the Colorado Avalanche at American Airlines Center.
Jamie Benn scored with 1:33 remaining, after Joe Pavelski scored with 3:28 left, for Dallas to tie the game 3-3.
Tyler Seguin scored in the second period and in the shootout, and Ben Bishop made 25 saves for the Stars, who finished the preseason 4-3-0.
Nazek Kadri and Andre Burakovsky scored in the first period, and Joonas Donskoi scored in the third for the Avalanche, who finished the preseason 2-3-1. Philip Grubauer made 33 saves.
During the game, the Avalanche announced that restricted free agent forward Mikko Rantanen signed a six-year contract.
Dallas opens the regular season against the Boston Bruins on Oct. 3.
Colorado opens the regular season against the Calgary Flames on Oct. 3.

Lindholm breaks tie for Ducks against Coyotes

Hampus Lindholm broke a tie in the third period, and the Anaheim Ducks defeated the Arizona Coyotes 2-1 in a preseason game at Honda Center.
Lindholm scored on the power play at 5:23, and Jakob Silfverberg scored in the second period for the Ducks.
Vinnie Hinostroza scored a first-period goal for the Coyotes, who went 0-for-4 on the power play.
John Gibson made 19 saves on 20 shots through two periods, and may have left the game with a leg inury. Ryan Miller made seven third-period saves for Anaheim, which finished the preseason 4-1-1 under new coach Dallas Eakins.
Darcy Kuemper made 35 saves for Arizona, which finished the preseason 4-3-0. Defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson (illness) was scratched.
The Ducks and Coyotes open the regular season at Anaheim on Oct. 3.
