The last gasp of the Edmonton Oilers' dynasty came in 1990, when they won their fifth championship in seven years. Four years later, the captain of that team, Mark Messier, scored the goal that ended the New York Rangers' 54-year drought, the longest in League history. By the end of an eventful decade, a host of future Hall of Famers had led the Pittsburgh Penguins to two titles, the New Jersey Devils and Colorado Avalanche announced their arrival among the NHL's elite teams with their first Stanley Cup wins and Detroit left the "Dead Things" era behind with consecutive championships, an accomplishment that has yet to be repeated.
