Welcome to the NHL Status Report. Here is the latest lineup/injury news around the NHL.

Ottawa Senators

Jake Sanderson did not play against the Boston Bruins on Monday, and he also won't play at the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday. The defenseman left a 3-2 win at the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday at 12:45 of the first period because of an undisclosed injury. He returned to Ottawa instead of traveling with the team to Boston. The Senators play their home opener against the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday. "Went home, got some testing done," coach Travis Green said Monday. "I would call it not as serious, as we were hoping it wasn't going to be and I don't think it's going to be. But he definitely won't play the rest of this trip." Sanderson played 4:29 during six shifts before exiting the game against Toronto. He missed part of training camp because of an undisclosed injury.

Chicago Blackhawks

Connor Bedard participated in some drills and took some shots with the Blackhawks for the first time this season Monday, but coach Jeff Blashill said there’s no change to the new captain’s timeline. Chicago’s top center had surgery on his left shoulder after sustaining an injury during an offseason training session in Vancouver on July 2. The 21-year old, who left the ice midway through the session when the Blackhawks began a more physical portion of practice, is not expected back until sometime next month. “He’s not cleared for contact, so on days where you can do some of the stuff we were doing today at the beginning, it's awesome to have him out there,” Blashill said. “Not just for his sake, (but) in a sense that you want to have other people on the ice and be used to that. It's great that he's able to do that, but right now he's not cleared for contact. I don't have a date when he'll have an exam to be cleared for contact, so I can't give you any kind of an update on timeline, other than he's out there skating noncontact, which is great.” … Bowen Byram returned to practice and is expected to play against the St. Louis Blues on Tuesday (8 p.m. ET; BN+, STLNHL, CHSN). The defenseman missed a 4-3 loss to the Buffalo Sabres, his former team, on Saturday. Byram’s wife gave birth to twin girls over the weekend. Byram was acquired in a trade with Buffalo on June 23 and signed a six-year, $75 million contract ($12.5 million average annual value) on July 1 that begins next season. He had an NHL career-high 42 points (11 goals, 31 assists) in 82 games last season. … Andrew Mangiapane (lower body) is now week to week, Blashill said. The forward sustained the injury during the second period of a 5-2 loss to the Vegas Golden Knights on Tuesday and did not return.

Edmonton Oilers

Jason Dickinson is expected to make his season debut with the Oilers for the start of a three-game road trip that begins at the Anaheim Ducks on Wednesday (10 p.m. ET; Prime Video, KCOP-13, SNW). The center sustained a foot injury blocking a shot against the San Jose Sharks on April 8 and played with it during the Stanley Cup Playoffs. He reaggravated the injury during training camp. “If I’m being honest, I never quite got to 100 percent over the summer,” Dickinson said. “I was making jumps, but it felt like every jump I made, I plateaued for a couple of weeks.” Dickinson had four points (one goal, three assists) in 17 games for Edmonton after he was acquired in a trade from the Chicago Blackhawks on March 4. He had three points (two goals, one assist) in four playoff games. The 31-year-old signed a five-year, $20 million contract ($4 million AAV) with Edmonton on June 21.

Washington Capitals

Matt Roy did not practice with the Capitals on Monday and is questionable to play against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Wednesday (7:30 p.m. ET; HBO MAX, TNT). The defenseman was injured during a 3-1 loss at the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday, leaving the game at 14:56 of the second period. Roy does not have a point in two games this season; he had 19 points (two goals, 17 assists), was plus-18 and averaged 20:37 of ice time in 79 games in 2025-26.

St. Louis Blues

Alexey Toropchenko is out at least six weeks because of an upper-body injury, the Blues announced Sunday. The forward was injured during the second period of their season opener Friday, a 4-0 win at the Dallas Stars. Toropchenko was behind the net when he was hit into the glass by two Stars players with 16:32 remaining in the period. He did not return to the game and then missed a 6-1 loss at the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday. Toropchenko had 11 points (four goals, seven assists) in 65 games for St. Louis last season. “He's one of those glue guys that you know is going to play the right way,” coach Jim Montgomery said Monday. “There's a reason I started with him in Dallas with 'Sutes' (Pius Suter) is because they start you off on the right foot. You know what you're going to get and the right way to play in a good road game. We're going to miss that, but it gives other guys an incredible opportunity (and) for some guys to move into that ice time and role." The Blues (1-1-0) visit the Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday (8 p.m. ET; BN+, STLNHL, CHSN).

New Jersey Devils

Connor Brown has begun skating on his own, but the Devils forward will remain out of the lineup this week. Brown sustained a lower-body injury toward the end of practice Sept. 28 and has missed the first two games of the regular season, against the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday (3-2 overtime win) and at the New York Islanders on Saturday (6-0 loss). New Jersey hosts the Utah Mammoth on Tuesday (7 p.m. ET; Utah16, MSGSN) and the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday.  "He’ll be ramping up and he won't be far away, I don't think, as long as there's no setbacks,” coach Sheldon Keefe said Monday. Brown had 43 points (18 goals, 25 assists) in 75 games last season, his first with New Jersey.

New York Rangers

Joe Veleno (lower body) still is being evaluated and will not play against the New York Islanders at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday (7:30 p.m. ET; ESPN, SN+), Rangers coach Mike Sullivan said Monday. Veleno, who has been New York's fourth-line center, was injured during the first period of a 4-2 win against the Utah Mammoth on Sunday. Oliver Bjorkstrand centered the fourth line at practice Monday, with Matt Rempe and Jaroslav Chmelar on the wings, but it's possible the Rangers will recall a center from Hartford of the American Hockey League. … Defenseman Matthew Robertson didn't practice Monday because of roster management reasons, a team spokesperson said. "We're going to have to work through some of the roster stuff," Sullivan said. "I'm still getting medical updates, all those things. We'll work through that stuff."

Boston Bruins

Michael Eyssimont was placed on waivers by the Bruins on Sunday with the purpose of assigning him to Providence of the American Hockey League. The 30-year-old forward has yet to play for Boston this season after he had 18 points (eight goals, 10 assists) in 56 regular-season games in 2025-26 and no points in two Stanley Cup Playoff games. The Bruins (2-1-0), who hosted the Senators on Monday, added Matthew Poitras to their active roster Monday. The forward had 44 points (13 goals, 31 assists) in 69 games for Providence last season.
