NHL Status Report: Lamoureux has shoulder surgery, out 4-6 months for Mammoth

Welcome to the NHL Status Report. With training camp and preseason games underway, here is the latest lineup/injury news around the NHL.

Utah Mammoth

Maveric Lamoureux had surgery to repair a dislocated shoulder and will be out 4-6 months, Mammoth general manager Bill Armstrong announced on Monday. The 22-year-old defenseman had one assist in five regular-season games with Utah last season, and 20 points (five goals, 15 assists) in 65 games with Tucson of the American Hockey League. Lamoureux was a first-round pick (No. 29) by the Arizona Coyotes at the 2022 NHL Draft. The Mammoth play their regular-season opener at home against the Chicago Blackhawks on Thursday (9:30 p.m. ET; Disney+, HULU, ESPN+).

St. Louis Blues

Logan Mailloux will miss at least eight weeks after having surgery on his right hand, the Blues announced on Monday. The defenseman had the procedure Sunday and has been placed on injured reserve. He had been expected to start the season on the right side of one of their top defense pairs. "He's had a great (training) camp but that's the game," general manager Alexander Steen said. "These things pop up sometimes when things are going good and it's not the right timing. But it's part of the game and Logan is in a good headspace, everything went well yesterday. Now his main goal is to rehab and get himself as prepared as he was for camp for when he's able to return. At that time, grab an oar and start rowing with the boys again." ... Defenseman Tyler Tucker was placed on IR on Monday because of a lower-body injury and is considered week to week. ... On Sunday, defenseman Adam Jiricek was recalled from Springfield of the American Hockey League, and defenseman Justin Barron was claimed off waivers from the Nashville Predators. One or both could be in the lineup for St. Louis' season opener at the Dallas Stars on Friday (9 p.m. ET; HBO MAX, truTV, TNT, SN1).

Detroit Red Wings

Simon Edvinsson is no longer skating with the Red Wings. The defenseman, who has been a restricted free agent since July 1, had been taking part in practices since the start of training camp. "As of today, Simon is not practicing with the team," interim general manager Shawn Horcoff said in a statement. "The organization will continue conversations with Simon and his representatives." The 23-year-old had 25 points (nine goals, 16 assists) and averaged 22:21 of ice time in 72 games last season.

Pittsburgh Penguins

Bryan Rust was placed on injured reserve Monday. The forward sustained an upper-body injury during a 3-1 win in a preseason game against the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday. "'Rusty' is obviously a huge part of our group,” coach Dan Muse said Sunday. “I thought he had a great camp, and so, it's unfortunate." Also going on injured reserve were forwards Justin Brazeau (lower body), Ben Kindel (lower body), Blake Lizotte (upper body) and defenseman Ryan Graves (knee); Lizotte is considered day to day, Brazeau and Kindel are considered week to week, and Graves is out indefinitely. "Ryan Graves at the end of last season actually had surgery on one of his knees to get it cleaned out," general manager Kyle Dubas said Monday. "That knee is causing him issues so we're going to get that knee rehabbed and then his other knee is also having issues so once we get the first part addressed we'll move onto the other knee and get him back up to 100 percent." The Penguins open the season at the Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday (7:30 p.m. ET; HBO MAX, truTV, TNT). ... Forward Andrei Kuzmenko was designated a non-roster player. He returned to Russia on Thursday following the death of his father, Alexander, during a fishing trip Tuesday. "The funeral for his father is today," Dubas said. "Obviously horrific and tragic situation. All our thoughts are with Andrei and his family. We will have an update on his status once he and his family get through that initial shock. ... He will be back when he's ready and his family is in a good spot in Russia."

Montreal Canadiens

Oliver Kapanen (lower body) did not practice with the Canadiens on Monday, and is considered day to day. Kapanen had been skating at second-line center, between Juraj Slafkovsky and Ivan Demidov, and likely would have played in Montreal's season opener at Toronto on Tuesday (7 p.m. ET; TVAS, SN). Alex Newhook practiced in that spot Monday. "I feel like 'Newy' has worked himself into a great Swiss army knife for us," coach Martin St. Louis said. "There's a lot that he can do and he's grown a lot off the puck, defensively, he's using his speed defensively. And there's not much that he can't do -- play wing, play center, play (penalty kill) or (power play)."

New York Islanders

Mathew Barzal is listed as an injured/non-roster player but has not been ruled out by the Islanders for their season-opener at the Toronto Maple Leafs on Wednesday (7:30 p.m. ET; Prime, MSGSN.) The forward is expected to skate Wednesday morning. He did not practice during training camp or play in any of the Islanders' four preseason games after aggravating a prior injury that caused inflammation.

Vancouver Canucks

Jake DeBrusk didn't practice Monday while being evaluated for a lower-body injury, but coach Manny Malhotra is positive the forward will be available for the season opener at the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday (10 p.m. ET; SN). "We just needed an extra day to evaluate," Malhotra said. "We don't expect any changes to his availability (Tuesday). Just wanted to make sure that he felt good today and got things taken care of." Malhotra said the injury occurred during a preseason game against the Seattle Kraken on Saturday when DeBrusk was hit by a shot by teammate Brock Boeser. DeBrusk could open the season on Vancouver's top line, alongside Elias Pettersson and Jonathan Lekkerimaki. Arshdeep Bains practiced in DeBrusk's spot Monday.

New Jersey Devils

David Rittich was assigned to Utica of the AHL on Monday after the goalie cleared waivers. Rittich signed a one-year, $1 million contract July 3 and was competing with Jake Allen and Nico Daws in a three-goalie rotation during the preseason. The Devils had claimed goalie Remi Poirier off waivers from the Dallas Stars on Sunday.

Dallas Stars

Colin Blackwell was assigned to Texas of the AHL on Monday after clearing waivers. The forward had 15 points (four goals, 11 assists) in 70 regular-season games for the Stars last season and had five shots on goal in six Stanley Cup Playoff games.

Minnesota Wild

Brock Faber is being evaluated after the Wild defenseman was hit in the head by a puck during a 2-1 preseason loss to the Stars on Friday. Faber was struck by a shot from the point with 9:36 remaining in the second period. He was down on the ice briefly before skating to the bench under his own power, returned for the next shift and played the rest of the period before leaving. Coach John Hynes said he'd have an update Tuesday. "We do have to give it a little bit of time with 'Fabes' just because of the type of injury it was," Hynes said. "Lots of times, you feel good, but you’ve got to give it a little bit of time to make sure." Faber was not at the rink during the weekend. Minnesota plays its regular-season opener at Nashville on Thursday (8 p.m. ET; Wild+, MINNHL, SCRIPPS).

Buffalo Sabres

Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen left early in the third period of a 3-1 loss to Pittsburgh in Buffalo's preseason finale Saturday. "He tweaked something, and we just got him off," Sabres coach Lindy Ruff said of the goalie. "Lower body. Didn't want to take any chances." ... Ruff said goalie Alex Lyon was "going to miss a few days, for sure," after sustaining an upper-body injury in the first period of a 3-2 overtime loss to the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday. After diving forward and corralling a loose puck, he flexed his left arm and immediately skated toward the bench. The Sabres play their season opener at the Columbus Blue Jackets on Thursday (7 p.m. ET; CBJHN, CBJNHL, MSG-B).
