NHL Network's top 30 highlights

From the first faceoff of the season to the final buzzer that started the Pittsburgh Penguins' Stanley Cup celebration, there were thrills, chills and countless memorable moments. NHL.com presents the top 30 highlights from last season, as chosen by a NHL Network panel:

1. June 12, 2016:Penguins win Stanley Cup, captain Sidney Crosby wins Conn Smythe
After a rough start to the season that ultimately led to the firing of coach Mike Johnston, the Pittsburgh Penguins regroup in the second half and it culminates with the franchise's fourth Stanley Cup championship.
The Penguins finish off the San Jose Sharks in the Stanley Cup Final with a 3-1 win in Game 6 at SAP Center. Crosby gets two assists and
wins the Conn Smythe Trophy
as the most valuable player of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
"When you look at the group, how many new players we brought in, it was pretty special what we were able to do," Crosby said. "We had a core that played together for a while, there was some trust there. When you look at all the guys we added, the young guys, the guys we added through trades, I think it takes a special group to be able to come together that quickly and build that trust, basically, along the way."
2. Feb. 20 and March 7, 2016:Jaromir Jagr scores two goals (Nos. 741, 742) to pass Brett Hull for third place on the NHL's all-time goal scoring list; gets assist to pass Gordie Howe for third place on all-time points list (1,851)
Five days after celebrating his 44th birthday, Jagr scores once in the second period and again in the third to help give the Florida Panthers a 3-1 win against the Winnipeg Jets. His 741st and 742nd goals pass Hull for third place on the NHL's all-time list.

"It's awesome for him to score those two goals and go ahead of Brett Hull," Panthers coach Gerard Gallant said. "It's unbelievable. He had great chances and great jump to his legs. We were happy to see that. We were hoping to get him that hat trick, but it just didn't happen."
More than two weeks later, Jagr gets an assist on Aleksander Barkov's goal at 16:48 of the first period of a 5-4 overtime loss against the Boston Bruins
to move past Howe for third place on the NHL's all-time points
list with 1,851. It comes in his 1,613th NHL regular-season game.
3. Nov. 19, 2015; Jan. 10, 2016: Alex Ovechkin passes Sergei Fedorov to become the NHL's all-time Russian goals leader (484); becomes 43rd player in NHL history to score 500 career goals
After going four straight games without a goal, the Washington Capitals captain passes Fedorov and
becomes the greatest Russian goal scorer in NHL history
with No. 484 at 7:01 of the third period in a 3-2 loss to the Dallas Stars at Verizon Center.
Less than two months later, Ovechkin reaches another milestone with his 500th NHL goal during a 7-1 win against the Ottawa Senators at Verizon Center. The goal comes during a power play at 16:19 of the second period.
Ovechkin scores goal No. 501 in the third period.
"You look at some of the names that are up there, there's obviously some pretty big names," Capitals coach Barry Trotz said. "And obviously [Ovechkin] getting it done, fittingly, in this building was the only right thing."

4. May 5, 2016: Predators defeat Sharks in triple overtime thriller, longest game in Nashville history
Predators center Mike Fisher scores 11:12 into triple OT for a 4-3 win against the Sharks in Game 4 of the Western Conference Second Round of the playoffs at Bridgestone Arena.
Fisher's second goal of the game ends the marathon, more than 25 minutes longer than the second-longest game of the 2016 postseason (Game 5 of the New York Islanders and Panthers first-round series, which lasted 96:00 before ending in 2OT).
With the win, the Predators tie the best-of-7 series 2-2.
"I'm so happy for the guys for pulling it out and getting the win," Nashville coach Peter Laviolette said. "They invested a lot. There's a lot of character in our room. To win a game like that is big if you think about the other scenario. You're 3-1 the other way; one win, three losses. This ties it up 2-2; it shortens the series. Our guys played like champs tonight."

5. Nov. 28 and Dec. 6, 2015: Patrick Kane extends point streak to 19 games (record by an American-born player), breaks Bobby Hull's Chicago Blackhawks record by extending point streak to 22 games
Not a bad week for Kane, who scores a power-play goal 11:10 into a 3-2 overtime loss to the Los Angeles Kings
to become the first U.S.-born player to get a point in 19 consecutive games

"It's cool when you think about how many great American players have played the game and the two players that were at that 18-game point streak and what they've done in their careers," Kane said after passing the mark co-held by Eddie Olczyk (with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1989-90) and Phil Kessel (with the Boston Bruins in 2008-09).
Eight days later, Kane sets a Blackhawks record when he extends his point streak to 22 games in a 3-1 win against the Winnipeg Jets at United Center. He gets an assist after his hand pass in the defensive zone leads to an empty-net goal by Artemi Panarin with 1:46 remaining.
Kane passes Hull, who had a 21-game point streak with the Blackhawks during the 1971-72 season.

6. April 25, 2016:Blues defeat Blackhawks by matter of inches in Game 7 of first round
After being defeated in the first round of the playoffs in three straight years, the St. Louis Blues finally get over the hump, defeating the Blackhawks 3-2 in Game 7 at Scottrade Center and advancing to the second round for the first time since 2012.
But the game almost went to overtime.
Blackhawks defenseman Brent Seabrook nearly ties it with 3:30 remaining, only to see his shot hit each goal post before Blues defenseman Alex Pietrangelo cleared the puck.
"Every game was just packed with a sense of urgency and emotion," St. Louis coach Ken Hitchcock said. "Every game felt like its own sudden-death game. It was a lot of fun. It was a lot of fun to coach in it, to play in it, to strategize in it. It was a lot of fun."
7. Jan. 31, 2016: John Scott named All-Star Game MVP
It was an unforgettable night for Scott and his family when he scores two goals during a 3-on-3 tournament and is named MVP of the 2016 NHL All-Star Game following the Pacific Division's 1-0 win in the championship game against the Atlantic Division.
Scott, who has five goals in 286 games in his NHL career, is hoisted on the shoulders of teammates Joe Pavelski and Brent Burns of the Sharks at center ice after the game. He is awarded a 2016 Honda Pilot and $90,000 for being part of the winning team.
"You can't put into words, you can't write this stuff," Scott said. "It was a whirlwind and it went by so fast, but I loved it. It was probably the coolest thing I have done in hockey, for sure."

8. April 9, 2016:Braden Holtby ties Martin Brodeur's NHL single-season record with his 48th win
After falling short in his previous two attempts, third times the charm for Holtby, who makes 19 saves in the Capitals' 5-1 win against the St. Louis Blues at Scottrade Center.
An assistant general manager for the Blues, Brodeur is in attendance to see Holtby match his record. Brodeur played 21 seasons with the New Jersey Devils and set the mark in 2006-07.
"It just shows how good of a season he's had," Brodeur said. "It's a big record, Bernie Parent held it a long time before I surpassed him. Since (2007), I've been holding it. Who knows what's going to happen tomorrow, but I think it's great. It's a testament to him and how good of a season he's had."
9. March 28, 2016: Gordie Howe celebrates 88th birthday at Joe Louis Arena
Three days before he turns 88, the Detroit Red Wings legend visits Joe Louis Arena and receives a standing ovation from the 20,027 in attendance, who proceed to sing "Happy Birthday."
"It was really cool," Red Wings forward Dylan Larkin said. "Obviously I never got to see him play, but I've seen pictures and I see all his stats and some clips of him playing. It's really cool to see what he's done for Detroit and for the Red Wings."
Howe was presented a hockey puck birthday cake in one of the last great moments of his life; he dies on June 10.

10. April 6, 2016:Edmonton Oilers greats gather to say goodbye to Rexall Place
Once known as Northlands Coliseum, the Oilers home rink that hosted so many memorable moments and known as "The House Wayne Gretzky Built" hosts its final game after 42 years.
Gretzky, along with approximately 150 former Oilers are in attendance, including Mark Messier, Jari Kurri, Paul Coffey, Grant Fuhr and Glenn Anderson, for an emotional ceremony.
The current Oilers give the alumni and fans one more memorable moment with a 6-2 win against the Vancouver Canucks.
The Oilers will move to their new arena, Rogers Place, for the 2016-17 season.
11. May 25, 2016:
Sharks advance to Stanley Cup Final
for first time in their 25-year history
The Sharks end a quarter-century's worth of frustration with a 5-2 win against the Blues in Game 6 of the Western Conference Final at SAP Center.
Joel Ward scores twice and Martin Jones makes 24 saves for San Jose, which entered the NHL in 1991-92 and earns its first trip to the Cup Final.
Sharks forwards Patrick Marleau and Joe Thornton had played a combined 2,778 NHL regular-season games, the most by two teammates each making their first Cup Final appearance, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.
"It's a great night for those guys," Sharks coach Peter DeBoer said.
12. Feb. 2, 2016:Center Connor McDavid
scores in first game back from injury
McDavid, the No. 1 pick in the 2015 NHL Draft, scores in the Oilers' 5-1 win against the Columbus Blue Jackets at Rexall Place after missing 37 games because of a broken clavicle.
The goal comes 9:58 into the second period when McDavid gets behind the defense and puts a shot past Blue Jackets goalie Joonas Korpisalo. McDavid also gets two assists.
"I definitely didn't expect to be able to do that or play that kind of game," McDavid said. "I was very happy with how I felt. The timing and all that felt pretty good. It's one game, though. I've got a bunch left."
13. Feb. 13, 2016:Shayne Gostisbehere becomes first rookie defenseman in NHL history to have 11-game point streak; extends streak to 15 games with OT goal vs. Toronto Maple Leafs
Gostisbehere bursts onto the NHL scene after being recalled by the Flyers on Nov. 14, 2015.
He sets the NHL record for a point streak by a rookie defenseman
after scoring a power-play goal 3:49 into the third period during a 2-1 loss against the New Jersey Devils at Wells Fargo Center. Gostisbehere passes former Colorado Rockies defenseman Barry Beck, who had two 10-game point streaks as a rookie in 1977-78.
One week later,
Gostisbehere scores 29 seconds into overtime
to give Philadelphia a 5-4 win against the Maple Leafs at Air Canada Centre, and extends his point streak to 15 games.
"I'm living the dream," said Gostisbehere, who had five goals and 13 assists during the streak. "What can you say? I mean, it's just cool to have my teammates do it with me and see how happy they get. It's awesome."
14. April 24, 2016: Islanders win playoff series for first time since 1993
Captain John Tavares ends a 23-year drought when he scores at 10:41 of 2OT to give the Islanders a 2-1 win against the Panthers in Game 6 of the first round at Barclays Center.
It marks the Islanders' first playoff series win since 1993, when they defeated the Capitals in six games in the first round.
"We went through the rebuilding stage with a young hockey club and went through some tough times, we knew eventually we'd get to this point," Islanders coach Jack Capuano said. "I can't be more proud of the group that we have, led by our captain."

15. May 16, 2016: Sidney Crosby scores first career playoff overtime goal
After 112 playoff games, the Penguins captain
gets his first overtime goal 40 seconds in
to give Pittsburgh a 3-2 win against the Tampa Bay Lightning in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Final at Consol Energy Center.
The Penguins even the best-of-7 series after the Lightning won 3-1 in Game 1. Pittsburgh held a 2-0 lead in the first period before letting it slip away before intermission.
"I] was just happy," Crosby said. "Whether I've scored in the last seven games or haven't scored in the last whatever, it feels good to get rewarded. I think we deserved that one tonight."
**16. Jan. 10, Jan. 19, 2016:** Panthers, Blackhawks each win 12th straight game
Jagr and Jonathan Huberdeau score goals before the midway point of the first period and Al Montoya makes 24 saves for the Panthers, who extend their franchise-record win streak to 12 games with a 2-1 victory against the Oilers at Rexall Place on Jan. 10.
Florida becomes the first NHL team to win 12 consecutive games since the Boston Bruins in March 2014. The Panthers win their sixth straight on the road, also a franchise-best.
The Blackhawks also win their 12th in a row with a 4-1 victory against the Predators at Bridgestone Arena on Jan. 19. Kane scores two goals and gets an assist and Corey Crawford makes 38 saves.
It's the longest win streak for Chicago since 2012-13 season, when it reeled off 11 consecutive victories.
17. April 3, 2016: Patrick Kane's second regular-season hat trick gives him 100 points
The Blackhawks forward
[becomes the first American-born player in 20 years to reach 100 points
when he gets three goals and an assist in a 6-4 win against the Bruins at United Center.
Kane is the first Blackhawks player to get 100 points in a season since Jeremy Roenick had 107 in 1993-94.
"It's special," Kane said. "That's kind of a mark you always dream of hitting, and for it to happen this year in front of the home crowd with a few games left is pretty special."
18. Jan. 24-25, 2016: Bobby Ryan scores goal, wins kid a puppy; Cam Atkinson scores hat trick, wins kid a puppy
Prior to a game against the New York Rangers, Ottawa Senators fan Cole Jansen holds up a sign for Ryan at Canadian Tire Centre that reads, "Bobby, Dad said if you score we get a puppy!"
The forward holds up his end of the bargain
when he scores with 20 seconds remaining in the second period
of a 3-0 win. The Jensen family gets a puppy and names him Bobby.
In a similar situation the following night at Nationwide Arena, nine-year-old Blue Jackets fan Maddie Wright holds a sign for Atkinson that reads, "Dad says if 13 scores on my birthday we get a dog."

19. Jan. 30, 2016:Dylan Larkin sets fastest skater record, defenseman P.K. Subban pays homage to Jagr, and forward Joe Pavelski and defenseman Brent Burns bring kids onto the ice during breakaway challenge at NHL Skills Competition
In one of the more memorable NHL Skills Competitions at All-Star weekend, Larkin becomes the fastest skater in the history of that event, finishing his lap in 13.172 seconds during the Bridgestone Fastest Skater competition to break Mike Gartner's record of 13.386 set in 1996. Larkin, 19, was born five months after Gartner set his record.
Subban, of the Montreal Canadiens at the time, honors Jagr by wearing a mullet wig, an old-school Jofa helmet and a Panthers jersey for the Breakaway Challenge.

Subban was denied by Rinne, but still was voted the winner by the fans at Bridgestone Arena.
"I just cooked it up once I got to the rink," Subban said. "I have to give a huge thanks to the training staff. They got me the props and got them ready in time. Everything was last-minute."
In a terrific father-son moment, Pavelski and Burns, of the Sharks, bring their sons on the ice and they skate alongside their dads.
Jagger Burns scores off a between-the-legs pass from Nathan Pavelski, prompting a celebration that sees "Lil Burns" drop his gloves and begin dancing near the left faceoff circle.
20. Feb. 9, 2016: Devils retire Martin Brodeur's No. 30
Brodeur, who led the Devils to three Stanley Cup championships and set a host of NHL goaltending records,
has his No. 30 retired by the Devils
in a ceremony at Prudential Center before facing the Oilers.
Brodeur, who played 20 years in New Jersey, is overcome with emotion when the Devils unveil a bronze statue that now stands outside Prudential Center.
The No. 20 pick in the 1990 NHL Draft, Brodeur was a nine-time All-Star and four-time Vezina Trophy winner. He holds NHL career goaltending records for wins (691), shutouts (125), games played (1,266) and minutes played (74,439). In the Stanley Cup Playoffs, Brodeur ranks first in shutouts (24) and second in wins (113) behind Patrick Roy (151).
21. Oct. 8, 2015: Jack Eichel scores goal in first NHL game
Eichel, the No. 2 pick at the 2015 draft, makes an immediate impact in his debut with the Buffalo Sabres against the Senators at First Niagara Center.
With Buffalo trailing by two, Eichel scores a power-play goal 9:11 into the third period from the top of the left circle after a cross-ice feed from forward Marcus Foligno in a 3-1 loss.
"It was a pretty special moment for me," Eichel said. "Today was my dad's birthday. I have a lot of family in town, so it was a special moment for me to score my first one today. A win definitely would have capped it off, but you can't have everything."
Eichel had 24 goals and 32 assists in 81 games in his rookie season.

22. Jan. 20, 2016: Forward Jonathan Drouin demands trade from Tampa Bay Lightning, fails to report for American Hockey League game
The Lightning suspend Drouin indefinitely without pay for failing to report to a game for Syracuse against the Toronto Marlies.
Drouin, the No. 3 pick in the 2013 draft, had been with Syracuse since Jan. 2. A trade request made on his behalf by his agent in November was revealed the next day.
But Lightning general manager Steve Yzerman doesn't find a trade to his liking, and ultimately keeps Drouin. The 20-year-old returns to Tampa Bay a week before the playoffs begin and helps the Lightning reach the conference final with five goals and nine assists in 17 postseason games.
23. Nov. 3, 2015: Tyler Seguin scores seventh career NHL hat trick, meets fan after game on her 16th birthday
The Dallas Stars forward makes a girl's 16th birthday even sweeter at TD Garden prior to a game against Seguin's former team, the Bruins. Seguin notices the teenage fan holding a sign that reads, "My only wish for my Sweet 16 is to see Tyler Seguin," during warmups, skates over to the glass and tosses a puck to the birthday girl, bringing her to tears.
Seguin then got a hat trick in the Stars' 5-3 win
and met the fan outside the locker room after the game, where he wished her a happy birthday and autographed the puck.
24. Dec. 11, 2015: Oilers host Glen Sather Night against Rangers
After spending 24 years as a coach and general manager in Edmonton, Sather becomes the ninth person in Oilers history to have a banner raised to the rafters at Rexall Place. Sather, who was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1997 as a builder, won the Stanley Cup four times as a coach (1984, 1985, 1987, 1988) and a fifth championship in 1990 as president and general manager, all with the Oilers. He joined the Rangers in the same capacity in 2000.
With former players Messier, Kurri, Fuhr, Anderson and Coffey in attendance and a video message from Gretzky, Sather is honored in a pregame ceremony prior to the Oilers' 7-5 victory.
25. March 19, 2016:Actor Kevin Spacey surprises Panthers fans at "Spacey in Space Night"
A good-luck charm for the Panthers (their player of the game after each win was awarded a "Spacey in Space" sweatshirt, a blue hoodie depicting a disembodied Spacey face floating in space), the star of "House of Cards" and "American Beauty" shows up at BB&T Center as a way of thanking players and fans in a game against the Detroit Red Wings.
Before a crowd of 20,817 (a Panthers record), the Oscar-winning actor gets a standing ovation when he reveals his face behind a cardboard mask of himself on the video board during stoppage in the second period. Florida is defeated 5-3.

26. Oct. 9, 2015: Islanders play NHL's first regular-season game at Barclays Center
Nassau Coliseum was the only place the Islanders called home in their first 43 years of existence, but they moved to Brooklyn for the start of last season.
Their first game at Barclays Center requires overtime after Islanders defenseman Marek Zidlicky scores 1:18 into the third period to tie the game 2-2. But Kane scores a power-play goal for the Blackhawks 1:49 into overtime and New York is defeated 3-2. John Tavares scores the first Islanders goal in their new home at 5:22 of the second period.
"It was a great atmosphere," Capuano said. "You don't really know what it's going to feel like until you get out there, but I thought the fans were into it, it was loud. Obviously a different atmosphere than the Coliseum, but I think the guys were looking forward to this game and dropping the puck tonight."
27. April 18, 2016: Late Flyers founder Ed Snider honored before Game 3 of Eastern Conference First Round vs. Capitals
After losing the owner of their franchise, the Flyers and a capacity crowd at Wells Fargo Center watch
an emotional video tribute
prior to a playoff game against the Capitals. Snider, who founded the Flyers in 1967, died on April 11 at the age of 83 after a battle with cancer.
Philadelphia forward Michael Raffl scores 57 seconds into the game, but the Flyers then allow six unanswered goals in a 6-1 defeat.
28. April 27, 2016: Predators win first Game 7 in Nashville history
Never before had the Predators gone the distance in a seven-game playoff series. But with a chance to wrap up their first-round series against the Anaheim Ducks, the Predators get goals from Colin Wilson and Paul Gaustad in the first period, and Rinne makes 36 saves in a 2-1 win at Honda Center.
It was the first playoff series victory for the Predators since 2012.
"It's a big step," Laviolette said. "I feel that if you can't take this one step, you can't take any more steps. That makes it a really big win for our guys and for our team. When you're faced with these situations, you're either going home or going on and playing hockey to continue to fight for the Cup. It was a big night."
29. April 29, 2016: "Jo Paw-velski" makes her debut before Game 1 of second round, becomes Sharks mascot for remainder of Stanley Cup Playoffs
The Sharks had never reached the Cup Final, but a little luck from a black cat that ran onto the ice prior to the Game 1 of the second round against the Predators perhaps helped change their fortunes.
After being rescued by members of the Sharks staff, the cat was sent to the Humane Society Silicon Valley, where a live webcam was set up in her room so Sharks fans could keep an eye on their new mascot. San Jose goes on to defeat Nashville in seven games and ultimately reaches the Cup Final for the first time before losing to the Pittsburgh Penguins in six games.

30. Oct. 7, 2015 : Blackhawks raise Stanley Cup banner for third time in six years
In front of a packed house at United Center, the Blackhawks celebrate their victory against the Lightning in the 2015 Stanley Cup Final for their third championship since 2010.
