NHL Trade Buzz: Penguins could seek goalie if Jarry out long term

Welcome to the NHL Trade Buzz. There are 12 days remaining until the 2021 NHL Trade Deadline (3 p.m. ET; April 12). Here's a look around the League at the latest deadline doings:

Pittsburgh Penguins

The Penguins could be in the market for a goalie if Tristan Jarry is out of the lineup for a significant amount of time.
The goalie didn't return after sustaining an upper-body injury in the first period of a 2-1 win against the New York Islanders on Monday. He was being evaluated Tuesday, a day off for the Penguins.
Casey DeSmith made 19 saves Monday and has allowed two goals or fewer in his past six starts. Emil Larmi backed up DeSmith for the final two periods Monday but has not played an NHL game.
The Penguins have won four straight games and are tied for second with the Islanders in the eight-team MassMutual East Division, behind the Washington Capitals. The top four teams will make the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Two trade options could be Devan Dubnyk of the San Jose Sharks and Elvis Merzlikins of the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Dubnyk, who is in the final year of a six-year contract, is 3-9-2 with a 3.18 GAA and .898 save percentage in 17 games this season but has a 2.72 GAA in 26 playoff games.
Merzlikins, in the first year of a two-year contract, is 5-5-2 with a 2.86 GAA and a .913 save percentage.

Vancouver Canucks

Travis Hamonic reportedly has gained interest around the NHL but it appears the Canucks want to keep the defenseman.
"We like him as a player and individual," coach Travis Green said Sunday. "He's hard to play against and has been everything we'd hope he'd be. Hopefully he can stay here."
Hamonic, who was born in St. Malo, Manitoba, prefers to play for a team in Western Canada because of family reasons, Sportsnet reported.
Hamonic has two assists and is averaging 18:18 of ice time in 19 games, and recently played on a defense pair with Quinn Hughes. Hamonic leads Canucks defensemen with 7.25 blocked shots per 60 minutes of ice time. Vancouver is tied with the Calgary Flames for fifth in the seven-team Scotia North Division. The top four teams will make the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
"'Hammer' has been a good addition to our group," Green said. "He's got good size, closes hard, he's got a heavy stick. I think he's been a solid addition for us."

Philadelphia Flyers

The market for defensemen could be taking an interesting turn with Shayne Gostisbehere being placed on waivers by the Flyers on Tuesday.
Defensemen are believed to be in demand ahead of the deadline and interested teams could claim the 27-year-old before noon ET on Wednesday without having to give up assets.
Two potential teams could be the Florida Panthers and Carolina Hurricanes.
The Panthers will be without No. 1 defenseman Aaron Ekblad for at least 12 weeks after he had
surgery Monday to repair a fracture in his left leg

Hurricanes general manager Don Waddell told The Athletic in comments published Friday that
Carolina could look to add a right-shot defenseman
. Gostisbehere is a left-shot defenseman but primarily has played on the right side during his seven NHL seasons.
"I can't speak for the other teams so maybe he is claimed, maybe he isn't," Flyers coach Alain Vigneault said Tuesday. "Shayne, like the rest of our team, is not the only one who has had some consistency issues, but this does permit us to be flexible and we do believe that he's going to clear waivers."

Minnesota Wild

The Wild might be content to stick with what they have at the deadline.
"I don't know how active we'll be," general manager Bill Guerin told the Star Tribune in comments published Tuesday. "It really depends. I'm really happy with our team right now. I'm happy with the job our players have done, and obviously our coaches have done a great job. Chemistrywise I think our team's good. Unless something really makes us better, I don't really feel the need to disrupt this group."
Minnesota is 7-2-1 in its past 10 games and is third in the eight-team Honda West Division; the top four teams will make the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Some of the Wild's biggest contributions have come from their youngest players. Rookie forward Kirill Kaprizov leads them with 27 points (11 goals, 16 assists) in 33 games, and rookie goalie Kaapo Kahkonen is 12-5-0 with a 2.29 goals-against average and .921 save percentage in 17 games.
Forwards Marcus Johansson, Nick Bonino and Nick Bjugstad, and defensemen Ian Cole and Brad Hunt each can become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.
The Wild have nine picks in the 2021 NHL Draft, including two each in the first round and third round.
"If something will make us better, then we'll do it," Guerin said. "But I do see the chemistry that our team has, and that's very important. To mix that up could be dangerous, but we'll see. We'll have to take a look."
