The Lightning returned home Sunday and practiced at Amalie Arena after they moved training camp to Nashville for several days because of Hurricane Ian.
Coach Jon Cooper said that the practice was the first day of the second half of camp. The roster was reduced by nine players Sunday with 29 left excluding injured forward Anthony Cirelli and defenseman Zach Bogosian.
"We have to thank Nashville for everything they did, opening their doors to us to be able to hold a training camp there," Cooper said. "Now it's time to really focus. We're back here. We were scheduled to go to Naples and now we're not, for obvious reasons."
The Lightning will hold remaining practices at the TGH IcePlex, in Brandon, Florida. They have two preseason games remaining, Thursday at the Florida Panthers and Saturday at home against the Panthers.
"We're missing some guys, we have a ton of new guys and [to see] where everybody fits … it takes games to do that," Cooper said. "The lines [Sunday] probably won't be the same as they will be by the end of the week."
Cooper said it was good to get back to the business of playing hockey, but hard not to think about the areas of Florida that were damaged by Ian. The southwest part of the state, about 75 miles south of Tampa, was hit hardest.
"It's upsetting to see what's going on just south of us, what could've happened to us and what actually happened down there," Cooper said. "It's still on everybody's minds, but we somehow have to find a way to focus on our jobs. We're going to do everything we can on the ice to help everybody and off the ice as well." -- Corey Long
