Bonino is in the final year of a two-year contract he signed with the Sharks on July 28, 2021, and can become an unrestricted free agent after the season.
The 34-year-old center has 19 points (10 goals, nine assists) in 59 games this season.
Selected by San Jose in the sixth round (No. 173) of the 2007 NHL Draft, Bonino has 353 points (158 goals, 195 assists) in 820 regular-season games with the Anaheim Ducks, Vancouver Canucks, Penguins, Nashville Predators, Minnesota Wild and Sharks and 48 points (19 goals, 29 assists) in 105 Stanley Cup Playoff games.
He won the Cup with the Penguins in 2016 and 2017; his play on the "HBK Line" with forwards Carl Hagelin and Phil Kessel was instrumental in Pittsburgh's 2016 Cup run, when Kessel had 22 points (10 goals, 12 assists), Bonino 18 (four goals, 14 assists) and Hagelin 16 (six goals, 10 assists).
The Penguins (31-21-9) hold the first wild card into the playoffs from the Eastern Conference.
