NYR@EDM: Nugent-Hopkins puts Oilers up 1-0 with a PPG

Connor McDavid reached 100 points for the sixth time in eight NHL seasons when he had two assists for the Edmonton Oilers in a
5-4 shootout loss
against the New York Rangers on Friday.

McDavid got his 100th point with an assist on a goal by Ryan Nugent-Hopkins at 7:52 of the first period that gave Edmonton a 1-0 lead, then reached 101 with another assist on Leon Draisaitl's goal in the second period.
The 26-year-old forward leads the NHL with 42 goals and 59 assists in 56 games this season.
"I mean, he's the best player in the world, so he pushes the envelope," Oilers forward Zach Hyman said after McDavid had a goal and two assists in a 6-3 win at the Ottawa Senators on Feb. 11. "I don't know if I'm surprised necessarily, but I think you're always kind of amazed."
Earlier this season, McDavid scored his 40th goal in his 48th game, a 4-2 win at the Vancouver Canucks on Jan. 21. It was the fewest games needed to reach the mark by an active player, passing Toronto Maple Leafs forward Auston Matthews, who scored 40 in 49 games last season.
McDavid also got his 50th point in his 27th game this season, the fewest needed to reach the mark in the NHL since Mario Lemieux did it in 26 games in 2002-03.
Selected by Edmonton with the No. 1 pick in the 2015 NHL Draft, McDavid has 798 points (281 goals, 517 assists) in 543 regular-season games, more than 100 points ahead of Draisaitl, who is second in the NHL in that span with 688 in 575 games.
The two seasons McDavid did not get 100 points were in 2015-16, when he finished with 48 points (16 goals, 32 assists) in 45 games as a rookie despite missing three months because of a fractured clavicle, and in 2019-20, when he had 97 points (34 goals, 63 assists) in 64 games before the season was paused because of the coronavirus pandemic.
