The defenseman has 17 points (five goals, 12 assists) and is averaging 18:11 of ice time in 49 games this season.
Maatta had signed a one-year, $2.25 million contract July 14, 2022, and the 28-year-old could have become an unrestricted free agent after the season.
"I'm happy," Maatta said. "I like it here a lot and I like where we're going. The organization is awesome. I like the city. It's nice to be somewhere that they trust you to give you that contract."
The Red Wings (25-20-8), who have won four straight games, play at the Calgary Flames on Thursday (9 p.m. ET; SNW, BSDET, ESPN+, SN NOW). They are four points behind the Washington Capitals for the second wild card into the Stanley Cup Playoffs from the Eastern Conference.
Selected by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the first round (No. 22) of the 2012 NHL Draft, Maatta has 153 points (35 goals, 118 assists) in 583 regular-season games with the Red Wings, Los Angeles Kings, Chicago Blackhawks and Penguins. He has 27 points (five goals, 22 assists) in 85 playoff games, and helped Pittsburgh win the Cup in 2016 and 2017.
"We came in here this summer talking about being predictable and simple as a team; he's all of that," Detroit coach Derek Lalonde said of Maatta. "He calms us down on the back end. It's hard to pick out a poor game he's given us this year. He's played in our top four, played in our bottom pair, been a huge part of the kill, has added some offense this year, which is a credit to him. Really happy for a good person."
