The two-dimensional Roman soldier featured on the uniform when the Senators debuted in 1992-93 will return next season.
The new logo is part of a uniform change that will be revealed prior to the start of the 2020 NHL Draft on Oct. 6. The Senators have three picks in the first round, including the No. 3 and No. 5 selections. Ottawa is the first team with two top-five picks since the New York Islanders in 2000 (Rick DiPietro, No. 1; Raffi Torres, No. 5).
There are some minor tweaks to the soldier, including gold trimming replacing the original logo's red on the soldier's cape and an altered look to the gold semicircle of laurel leaves. But it will look very similar to the uniforms worn by Sylvain Turgeon, Norm MacIver and Peter Sidorkiewicz in the Senators' first season.
"It is time for the Senators to return to our roots," owner Eugene Melnyk said Friday. "The fans of this great franchise have high expectations. We have heard from our fans, our partners and our players, and we have listened. It is time to return to our heritage, but in a bold, new manner. The Senators have a rich history in our community, and we are ready for the next chapter to begin."
