Ducks get three goals on power play in win

ANAHEIM -- Antoine Vermette and Corey Perry each had two points, and John Gibson made 21 saves to help the Anaheim Ducks defeat the Ottawa Senators 5-1 at Honda Center on Sunday.
Vermette and Perry each had a goal and an assist, and Joseph Cramarossa, Nick Ritchie and Sami Vatanen scored for the Ducks (15-9-5), who won their third straight at home and scored a season-high three power-play goals.
"We know the importance of [special teams]," Vermette said. "We pointed it out before the game, we wanted to make sure that special teams made a difference in the game. Usually, you don't get too many chances and we wanted to make sure we capitalized on those and tonight, we were sharp."

Ryan Dzingel scored for the Senators (16-11-2). Mike Condon started on back-to-back days but was pulled after allowing three goals on 13 shots in the first period. He was replaced by Andrew Hammond, who made 16 saves.
"It was a no-show all around. Not good," Senators coach Guy Boucher said. "We wanted to rebound from yesterday (a 4-1 loss to the Los Angeles Kings). We played a hard game yesterday and it didn't turn out our way but we didn't give much to the opponent and played a physical game. Today, we didn't play a physical game at all."
The Senators allowed three power-play goals for the third time this season and second time in as many games.
"It's tough to win games like that," Senators captain Erik Karlsson said. "I just think that's the way it goes sometimes, unfortunately. We have to do a better job of being in lanes and clearing rebounds."
Cramarossa gave the Ducks a 1-0 lead when he scored on a rebound 2:58 into the game.
Dzingel tied the game 1-1 with a power-play goal at 7:53 of the first period after he received a pass from former Ducks forward Bobby Ryan in the corner.
Perry scored his first power-play goal of the season at 12:05 to make it 2-1 and Vermette gave Anaheim a 3-1 lead on the power play with 47 seconds left in the first.
Vermette set up Ritchie's goal in the slot at 10:29 of the second with a backhand pass.
Vatanen banked a shot off the crossbar on the power play at 7:59 to give the Ducks a 5-1 lead.
Senators defenseman Chris Wideman left the game at 15:20 of the second period after being hit in the face by the puck. Boucher didn't have an update.

With the score close in the first period, Derick Brassard took a shot from the circle but Gibson made the save.

Unsung performance of the game

Cam Fowler started a sequence that led to Perry's goal with a point shot through traffic. Fowler sent a shot on net and the puck bounced away. Perry swept it in for the score.

Highlight of the game

Vermette showcased exceptional skating and skill to get around the defense and send a backhand pass between two Senators to Ritchie, who scored off the rush.

Ducks coach Randy Carlyle said he's seen the third line of Vermette, Ritchie and Ondrej Kase develop chemistry and it's showing on the ice.
"They start with the puck a lot." Carlyle said. "That's a great asset when you have a [center] who is leading the League in faceoffs. I'm not sure if he still is, but I know he was at one point. But he's a dominant center iceman with the puck and that's a huge advantage and we like to play into that."
