The 29-year-old goalie is 14-12-2 with a 2.77 goals-against average, .918 save percentage and one shutout in 31 games (29 starts) this season. He signed a one-year contract with Ottawa on May 5, 2021 and could have become an unrestricted free agent after the season.
"It means a lot to the family and I have two kids, and a fiancee who has been moving around with me the whole time," Forsberg told TSN. "It feels really good to finally know where I'm going to be for the next three years, so it means a lot for all of us.
"The whole coaching staff has believed in me from the start. Good conversations and discussions, and I've been working really well with (goaltending coach Zac Bierk). He's changed a few things in my game and we have kind of the same philosophy when it comes to my game so it's not like we have to argue about things. we just make a few tweaks here and there and then work on it. That's really nice."
Selected by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the seventh round (No. 188) of the 2011 NHL Draft, Forsberg is 29-41-7 with a 3.05 GAA, .908 save percentage and one shutout in 87 games (79 starts) with the Senators, Carolina Hurricanes, Chicago Blackhawks and Blue Jackets.
The Senators also have goalies
Filip Gustavsson
and Matt Murray on the roster. Murray is out with an upper-body injury.
Ottawa (22-35-5) is seventh in the Atlantic Division.
"It's a really good group of guys and we work hard on a daily basis," Forsberg said. "Obviously we haven't gotten the results that we wanted so far. But I want to be a part of this group, this organization, so I'm very happy to be here."
