Schmaltz sets Coyotes single-game point record in win

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Nick Schmaltz had the first seven-point game in the NHL in 10 years, and the Arizona Coyotes rallied for an 8-5 win against the Ottawa Senators at Gila River Arena on Saturday.

Schmaltz scored two goals and had five assists to set the record for most points in a game in Coyotes/Winnipeg Jets history.
Clayton Keller had two goals and two assists, and Shayne Gostisbehere had a goal and three assists for the Coyotes (16-35-4), who fell behind 5-4 early in the third period after blowing a four-goal lead. Matias Maccelli scored his first NHL goal, and Scott Wedgewood made 41 saves.
"It was one of those nights where everything was kind of coming my way and everything was going in," Schmaltz said. "So it was pretty special. But obviously that doesn't happen very often."
Schmaltz became the first player to score at least seven points in an NHL game since Sam Gagner scored eight (four goals, four assists) for the Edmonton Oilers against the Chicago Blackhawks on Feb. 2, 2012. Schmaltz also became the first player to score seven points without a hat trick since Eric Lindros (one goal, six assists) for the Philadelphia Flyers on Feb. 26, 1997, against the Senators.
"Sometimes such a game happens in a blowout, you know what I mean?" Arizona coach Andre Tourigny said. "But he came back big after we came back to tie the game."

OTT@ARI: Schmaltz impressively sets Coyotes record

Parker Kelly scored twice for his first multigoal game in the NHL, and Thomas Chabot had three assists for the Senators (19-30-5), who lost their fourth straight and sixth in their past seven. Matt Murray made 23 saves.
"We gave up way too much … that's what happens when you're chasing the game," Ottawa coach D.J. Smith said. "You're going all in on offense when you're down and you're not getting back (on defense)."
Nicholas Paul gave Ottawa a 5-4 lead at 1:53 of the third, batting the puck out of the air for the fifth consecutive Senators goal in a span of 7:59.
Keller tied it 5-5 at 4:07 from the slot after Murray turned over the puck behind the net, the first of four straight Arizona goals.
"Not the start we wanted, we were a little flat, but for us battle back and put five in the back of the net and have the lead early in the third, obviously that game stings a lot, that's for sure," Chabot said.
Lawson Crouse gave the Coyotes a 6-5 lead on the power play at 6:57, Gostisbehere made it 7-5 at 14:53, and Dysin Mayo scored at 16:26 for the 8-5 final.
"We got back to getting pucks behind them and creating turnovers off our forecheck and making plays, and we were able to pot a few there in the third period," Schmaltz said.
Schmaltz scored the first of four consecutive Coyotes goals, giving them a 1-0 lead on the power play at 4:10 of the first period.
"I was getting a lot of bounces tonight," Schmaltz said. "Some nights you've got a little extra jump and the puck kind of finds you a little bit more than most nights. Guys were making plays and finding me."

OTT@ARI: Kelly's 2nd goal in 2nd caps 3 in 1:23 span

Keller made it 2-0 at 13:53, and Schmaltz extended the lead to 3-0 at 2:50 of the second period. Maccelli, playing his second NHL game, pushed it to 4-0 at 12:35 off a Phil Kessel shot.
"There was a rebound right in front of the net and I saw the five-hole was open, and I tried to go backhand and it went in," Maccelli said.
Kelly made it 4-1 at 13:54, the first of three Ottawa goals in 2:12. Josh Norris made it 4-2 with a one-timer on the power play at 15:11, Kelly cut it to 4-3 at 16:06, and Alex Formenton tied it 4-4 at 56 seconds of the third.
"There were a lot of highs and lows, it was a fun game to play in, but in the end we're all disappointed," Kelly said.
NOTES: Schmaltz has scored 17 points (nine goals, eight assists) in his past nine games. His five assists tied a Coyotes/Jets record; the last player in their history to do it was Keith Tkachuk, the father of Senators forward Brady Tkachuk, on Feb. 23, 2001, for the Coyotes against the Buffalo Sabres. Schmaltz had four assists in the third period, one short of the Coyotes/Jets record for a period, set by Dale Hawerchuk for Winnipeg on March 6, 1984, against the Los Angeles Kings. … Arizona was 2-for-5 on the power play after it was 1-for-23 in its previous 11 games. … Coyotes forward Tyler Boyd played 20:07 after signing a two-year contract Saturday. … Arizona was 4-4-0 on an eight-game homestand. … Ottawa has lost the first three of a five-game road trip.
