Giroux lifts Senators past Kings in overtime

LOS ANGELES --Claude Giroux scored 20 seconds into overtime to give the Ottawa Senators a 3-2 win against the Los Angeles Kings at Crypto.com Arena on Sunday.

Giroux deked Jonathan Quick on a breakaway after receiving a lengthy backhand pass from Tim Stutzle.
"The whole goal was special," Ottawa defenseman Thomas Chabot said. "'G,' what a move. And, obviously, it was big for us. … To see that we can do it that way, it's big for us."

Brady Tkachuk had a goal and an assist, and Cam Talbot made 25 saves for the Senators (8-12-1), who have won consecutive games for the first time since winning four straight from Oct. 18-24.
Ottawa was 2-10-1 in the 13 games following that four-game winning streak prior to defeating the Anaheim Ducks 5-1 on Friday.
"When you play well and you look after the game and you're happy with your game but you didn't get the result, it's easy to go off page and start doing your own thing," Giroux said. "But it's good to know that we played the way we wanted to tonight and we have the result, so we know it works. We know we can get it done. It's about being consistent and doing it every night."
Arthur Kaliyev scored two power-play goals for the Kings (12-9-3), who are 1-2-2 in their past five games. Quick made 36 saves.
"We needed something because we sure didn't start the game very well," Los Angeles coach Todd McLellan said. "Power play obviously gave us some life. It gave us a chance to crawl back into the game. For as poorly as we were playing, it didn't get away on us, so that was a good thing."

Tkachuk gave the Senators a 1-0 lead at 4:55 of the first period. Chabot's shot deflected off Kings defenseman Alexander Edler, but the rebound caromed off the end boards to Tkachuk, who scored near the left post.
"I thought today, you know, we had a good job of getting traffic in the net and 'D' getting the puck through," Ottawa forward Alex DeBrincat said. "That's how the first goal goes in, and kind of breaks the ice there."
Kaliyev tied it 1-1 at 10:23 of the second period on a one-timer from just inside the right hash marks.
"I'm not saying that Arthur is (Washington Capitals forward Alex) Ovechkin by no means … but they both have element of a shot from that spot," McLellan said. "Obviously, different hands, and you have respect it and it opens up ice for others."
DeBrincat put the Senators back in front 2-1 with his own power-play goal at 12:17. Tkachuk passed from below the goal line to DeBrincat, whose one-timer snuck in between Quick's right skate and post.
Kaliyev again tied it 2-2 at 17:35 of the second, beating Talbot blocker side with a wrist shot from the top of the right circle. Six of his eight goals this season have been scored on the power play.
"He's a great shot, and he knows where to be, and we just try to find him," Kings forward Viktor Arvidsson said. "Today, he buried two, and it was good."
NOTES:Giroux's goal was the third-fastest in overtime in Senators history. Matt Duchene scored seven seconds in against the San Jose Sharks on Jan. 5, 2018, and Josh Norris scored nine seconds in against the Toronto Maple Leafs on May 12, 2021. … Kings forward Phillip Danault had two assists. … Kings forward Gabriel Vilardi, who leads the team with 11 goals, did not play because of an upper-body injury. McLellan indicated that Vilardi was injured in the 3-2 overtime loss at the Seattle Kraken on Nov. 19.
