Senators defeat Maple Leafs in shootout

TORONTO-- Tom Pyatt scored the deciding goal on his first NHL shootout attempt to give the Ottawa Senators a 3-2 win against the Toronto Maple Leafs at Air Canada Centre on Saturday.
"I was a little nervous when I got the call but I was confident in my abilities to get the goal for us," said Pyatt, who played his 289th NHL game. "I was just a little nervous going in but I tried to stay calm and go down there with some poise and do one of my go-to moves."

Ottawa forward Mike Hoffman scored a power-play goal with 1:11 left in the third period to tie it 2-2. Toronto defenseman Martin Marincin was serving a delay of game penalty.
"It's unfortunate; I thought we were playing a good period," Maple Leafs coach Mike Babcock said. "I think they had three shots to that point. I thought we were doing a real good job. It's a tough break for Marty, it went over (the glass). For Freddie [Andersen], obviously [the goal] was deflected, he thought it was going one way and it went back the other way and went through him."

Bobby Ryan also scored a shootout goal, and Mike Condon made 31 saves for the Senators (25-15-4), who swept a three-game road trip.
"Huge. We knew coming in today that it was going to be a battle for us," Ottawa captain Erik Karlsson said. "We were already battling last game [at the Columbus Blue Jackets, a 2-0 win Thursday]. We knew that we were going to be a little bit mentally and physically tired, which is normal at this time of the year. These are the games that you need something to fall back on, and I think we executed well."
Toronto (21-14-9) is 1-6 in the shootout this season. Auston Matthews, James van Riemsdyk and Tyler Bozak each failed in his attempt; Mitchell Marner scored a goal that was upheld after review.
"I don't know, maybe other goalies are good, maybe we're not that good at it," Babcock said. "We work on it every single pregame skate. It's something we'll have to get better at because we've left points."
Ryan scored his 10th goal of the season when he deflected a point shot from Marc Methot at the top of the crease at 14:02 of the first period to put Ottawa up 1-0.
Toronto outshot Ottawa 15-4 in the second period, and Bozak scored his 12th goal of the season on the power play at 7:31 to tie it 1-1. Matt Martin scored his fourth goal of the season 7:00 into the third period to give Toronto a 2-1 lead.

Nazem Kadri took a shot from just above the goal line in the right-wing corner that deflected off Martin's skate.

Save of the game

Matthews had a clear path to the net after taking a pass at the Senators blue line, but Condon kicked out his right pad to make the save at 4:41 of the second period.

Highlight of the game

Maple Leafs defenseman Jake Gardiner shot from the top of the right circle but Condon made the save. The goalie scrambled to his right to stop Hyman, who tried to jam in the rebound at the side of the net at 11:54 of the second period.

Unsung performance of the game

Matthews reached behind Andersen to pull the puck off the goal line with four seconds remaining in the third period and the score tied 2-2.

Need to know

Senators defenseman Mark Borowiecki (flu) missed his second consecutive game. ... Van Riemsdyk extended his point streak to 10 games (three goals, 11 assists) with an assist on Bozak's goal. It is the longest active streak in the NHL.
