VAN@OTT: Miller buries overtime winner

OTTAWA -- J.T. Miller scored 1:40 into overtime to give the Vancouver Canucks a 3-2 win against the Ottawa Senators at Canadian Tire Centre on Monday.

Miller scored with a forehand deke on a breakaway after Colin White tied it 2-2 for Ottawa with 2:10 remaining in the third and goalie Joey Daccord pulled for the extra skater.
"Well, I'm happy we won the game, but I didn't think we skated very well, didn't think we passed the puck very well," Vancouver coach Travis Green said. "Our goalie gave us the game."
Thatcher Demko made 44 saves in his sixth straight start for the Canucks (14-16-2), who are 5-1-0 in that span.
"[Demko is] really good for us. I feel like I say the same thing about him every time," Miller said. "He's giving us a chance to win, and that's all you can ask for. He's a really good goalie and that's it."

Josh Norris scored, and Daccord made 25 saves for the Senators (10-20-2), who were coming off a 4-3 win against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Sunday and are 1-3-1 in their past five games.
"We were outstanding," Ottawa coach D.J. Smith said. "To a man, how hard we played, take the 3-on-3 aside, I don't know how much harder we can play on a back-to-back. We made plays, we were dangerous, we defended when we had to. We just didn't come out on the right side of it, but that's a heck of an effort."
Jayce Hawryluk scored his first of the season to give Vancouver a 1-0 lead at 10:14 of the first period, jamming in a rebound in front of the net.
"It's huge. We know we needed these two points big tonight," Hawryluk said. "Obviously, it wasn't the way we drew it up, but we came out on top and that's all that matters."

Tanner Pearson made it 2-0 at 18:49 when he scored with a one-timer from the low slot after White blindly tried to clear the puck through the center of the Senators zone from behind the net.
"It's a tough play. You just have to have a short memory when that stuff happens. Just move forward," White said. "After that, it sparked me a little bit, more intensity. The rest of the game, we played really well. Obviously, I wish I could take that one back, but there's nothing I can do about it."

Tim Stutzle
