If the Penguins win the Stanley Cup this season, the Sharks will receive Pittsburgh's second-round pick in the 2021 draft instead.
"Patrick is a player who can play anywhere in our lineup," Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford said. "He's a good two-way player, provides leadership and will be a good fit with our team."

Marleau signed a one-year contract with the Sharks on Oct. 9 and can become an unrestricted free agent July 1. The 40-year-old forward has 20 points (10 goals, 10 assists) in 58 games this season.
On June 27, Marleau had the final season of a three-year, $18.75 million contract (average annual value $6.25 million) he signed with the Toronto Maple Leafs bought out by the Carolina Hurricanes, making him an unrestricted free agent. Carolina acquired Marleau in a trade with Toronto on June 22 with a conditional first-round pick and a seventh-round pick in the 2020 NHL Draft for a sixth-round pick in 2020.
Selected by San Jose with the No. 2 pick in the 1997 NHL Draft, Marleau has 1,186 points (561 goals, 625 assists) in 1,715 regular-season games with the Sharks and Maple Leafs. He is San Jose's leader in games played (1,551), goals (518) and points (1,102), and is second in assists (548) behind Joe Thornton.
"You always treat iconic players with the class they deserve," Sharks general manager Doug Wilson said. "I left it up to him, what he wanted to do and what he wanted to explore. … He made a decision I fully supported."
Marleau is fifth in NHL history in games played and has 127 points (72 goals, 55 assists) in 191 Stanley Cup Playoff games.
