Patrick Sharp agrees to one-year contract with Blackhawks

Forward Patrick Sharp and the Chicago Blackhawks agreed to terms on a one-year contract Saturday.

"It was a difficult process, something that was a new experience for me, but at the end of the day, the decision to return home to Chicago was really one I couldn't pass up," Sharp said. "I'm excited. My wife is excited. The family is thrilled to be coming back home, but I want to make it clear that I'm coming back home to contribute to the Blackhawks on the ice in whatever role that may be. I'm coming back to make some more great memories and try to help this team win another Stanley Cup. That's the reason I'm coming home."
Financial terms were not disclosed, but TSN reported the contract is worth $1 million.

Sharp, 35, had 18 points (eight goals, 10 assists) in 48 games with the Dallas Stars last season. He sustained a concussion Oct. 20 and missed 14 games. He returned to the lineup Nov. 19 and played seven games before being placed on injured reserve Dec. 3 with concussion-like symptoms. He also played through a hip injury that required season-ending surgery in late March.

"I'm feeling pretty good," Sharp said. "I got the surgery at the end of March] and it provided me with a ton of time to get healthy. And not just get healthy and back to the level that I was at in March, but it allows me a lot of time to kind of build my body back up to where I need to be to play a season. I've played a lot of pro hockey in my life. I know where I need to be physically and mentally to start a season, and the hip surgery, the time that I've given myself for that surgery is plenty. So I can update you and say that I'm pushing it pretty hard in the gym right now, and I've been on the ice in full equipment skating, so I don't anticipate any problems going forward. I still have a ton of time to be ready for Day One and be ready for training camp."

He scored 20 goals with Dallas in 2015-16, the eighth time he scored at least 20 goals in an NHL season.
Sharp was traded to the Stars on July 10, 2015, following 10 seasons with the Chicago Blackhawks. He had 511 points (239 goals, 272 assists) in 679 games with the Blackhawks, helping them win the Stanley Cup three times (2010, 2013, 2015). He had 22 points (11 goals, 11 assists) in 22 games during the 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
"Obviously, we've accomplished an awful lot with Patrick previously," Bowman said. "But this is not really about looking backward. This is looking forward. We're looking ahead. Patrick, he's always trained very hard. I expect him to bring a lot of speed to the table. I think that's the one thing that he still has. He's a great skater. He knows how to put the puck in the net. That's something that, some players just have a knack for getting open and getting their shot off, and Patrick certainly can do that."

He was selected in the third round (No. 95) of the 2001 NHL Draft by the Philadelphia Flyers. In 14 seasons with the Stars, Blackhawks and Flyers, he has 599 points (277 goals, 322 assists) in 869 regular-season games and 87 points (47 goals, 40 assists) in 142 playoff games.
