McCabe was not assessed a penalty on the play.
"As clean as you can get," Sabres forward Brian Gionta said. "Obviously you don't want to see anyone get hurt. I don't care if he's on your team or not."
Laine, the No. 2 pick in the 2016 NHL Draft, had an assist in the first period. He leads NHL rookies with 37 points (21 goals, 16 assists) in 42 games.
"It's our best player, arguably," Jets forward Drew Stafford said. "So it's not good any time you see a guy in that kind of a position on the ice with his helmet and the way he was. I've been there before, it's not a good feeling. I don't really want to comment on the hit, it's not my place to do that. I just hope Patty's OK. It's just unfortunate."
Buffalo tied the game on the shift prior to the hit. Gionta scored the game-winner 4:03 later.
"It's obviously tough to see a guy like that leave the game, but we've got to rally around when something like that happens and we've got to pick it up to fill the void," Jets forward Mark Scheifele said.
