nikita malkin

In a career that has spanned 17 NHL seasons and 1,000 games, Pittsburgh Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin hasn't earned a reputation for showing his emotions.

Sunday in Chicago was a different story.
The Penguins celebrated Malkin reaching the 1,000 game milestone in a few unique ways. The first was having his son, Nikita, read the starting lineups.

Before Nikita took center stage, the entire team decided to mimic Malkin's well-known on-ice warmup routine. It made for a pretty funny visual.

Captain Sidney Crosby explained the thinking there.

The legendary Mario Lemeieux weighed in on what Malkin has meant to the franchise.

Malkin, of course, scored a goal and extended his points streak to seven games in a Penguins win, but the real celebration was off the ice.

After the game, a grateful Malkin lauded his teammates and talked about the surprise of seeing his wife and son at the road game.

"It was a big surprise for sure," Malkin said. "Very emotional for me. It's crazy because I was not ready... Best thing in my life for sure... I appreciate that they came to Chicago to give me a big surprise. I love them both."
