DALLAS -- Peter DeBoer is aware of the Game 7 success he's had in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
"Let's hope the streak continues," the Dallas Stars coach said Sunday of his 6-0 record in Game 7, the best in NHL history (minimum five games).
DeBoer will look to extend the streak when the Stars host the Seattle Kraken in Game 7 of the Western Conference Second Round on Monday (8 p.m. ET; ESPN, SN, TVAS). The winner will face the Vegas Golden Knights in the Western Conference Final.
DeBoer's Game 7 results have come with three teams: the New Jersey Devils (1-0 in 2012), San Jose Sharks (1-0 in 2016, 2-0 in 2019) and Golden Knights (1-0 in 2020, 1-0 in 2021).
Two coaches have had Game 7 wins with four teams: Darryl Sutter (8-3 with the Calgary Flames, Chicago Blackhawks, Los Angeles Kings and Sharks) and Scotty Bowman (6-3 with the Buffalo Sabres, Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Canadiens, Pittsburgh Penguins and St. Louis Blues).
In NHL history, home teams are 112-81 (.580) in 193 Game 7s, including 1-2 in 2023.
Though DeBoer has a perfect Game 7 record, the Stars franchise has had mixed results.
The Stars/Minnesota North Stars are 6-9 (.400) in Game 7, including 3-3 at home. Last season, Dallas lost 3-2 in overtime to Calgary on the road in Game 7 of the first round. In 2020, Joel Kiviranta had a hat trick, including an overtime goal, to give the Stars a 5-4 road win against the Colorado Avalanche in Game 7 of the second round.
That season, the Stars advanced to the Stanley Cup Final before losing to the Tampa Bay Lightning in six games.
DeBoer said he won't need to say much to get the Stars ready for this Game 7.
"We'll have meetings, but we've got great experience in that dressing room," DeBoer said. "Joe Pavelski, Ryan Suter, Jamie Benn, Tyler Seguin, those guys have played lots of Game 7s in their career and have risen to the occasion on a lot of different teams and at different times. They'll drive the bus for our group messaging-wise, and I've got great trust in them. They've been there, they've done that, they know what to do."
Dallas will try to learn from, and not repeat, the mistakes of Game 6, a 6-3 road loss Saturday. The Stars just didn't have the performance needed for an elimination game, especially in the first period.
After holding the Kraken in check for Games 4 and 5, winning those games by a combined 11-5, the Stars allowed three straight goals over the first and second periods in Game 6 and trailed 4-1 4:23 into the second.
"I think we're fine," Benn, the Dallas captain, said after Game 6. "Just get back to doing things the right way."
The Stars know what's at stake. It's going to be difficult upending the Kraken, who eliminated in the defending Stanley Cup champion Avalanche in the first round, winning Game 7 on the road.
But the Stars have home ice and are ready for the challenge.
"What a great opportunity," DeBoer said. "Win one game at home in front of our own fans and move on. That's what the NHL playoffs are all about. I can't wait."
