PHI@NYI: Barzal, Sorokin lead Isles to shootout win

UNIONDALE, N.Y. -- Anthony Beauvillier scored two goals, and the New York Islanders recovered for a 3-2 shootout win against the Philadelphia Flyers at Nassau Coliseum on Saturday.

Mathew Barzal scored the only goal in the shootout for the Islanders (24-10-4). Ilya Sorokin made 30 saves, then saved all four shots he faced in the shootout.
"It was actually kind of a weird game the way it played out," Beauvillier said. "I thought we did a good job kind of just sticking with the process at the end there. It's never easy when you blow a lead and they come back and have a push. I thought we did a good job of managing the game at the end. Huge two points for us."
Claude Giroux scored twice in 3:54 in the third period, and Travis Konecny had two assists for the Flyers (17-14-5). Carter Hart made 22 saves playing after two games as a healthy scratch.

Giroux made it 2-1 at 7:38 of the third with a backhand from the left side and tied it at 10:32 with a shot from the high slot.
Philadelphia was 0-for-3 on the power play, including a 5-on-3 advantage for 1:04 in the first period.
"I think where we're at at this point in the season, it's disappointing not to get that second point," Giroux said. "In the shootout, anything can happen. We need those extra points. But in saying that, I think our game today was our best in a while. We need to build on this."
Barzal scored in the fourth round of the shootout, beating Hart past his blocker.
"I've played 'Hartsy' a few times now and I feel like it's kind of been 50-50; he's gotten the better of me a little bit and I've scored a few times too," Barzal said. "So it's kind of a fun matchup and [I] just found a little hole there on the left side and buried it."

PHI@NYI: Martin, Beauvillier team up on power play

Beauvillier gave the Islanders a 1-0 lead at 12:01 of the first period on a pass from Matt Martin for a power-play goal, then made it 2-0 at 15:40 of the second period when he knocked down a clearing attempt at the Flyers blue line, got a return pass from Barzal and scored on a one-timer.
It was Beauvillier's first multigoal game of the season. He has scored six goals in his past seven after he scored two goals in his first 22 games.
"He played a heck of a game tonight," Barzal said. "It's always fun watching him score. That big smile, and when he's scoring and playing well, that's a big, big boost for our team."
It was Sorokin's first start since March 27, when he allowed four goals on nine shots and was pulled in the second period of a 6-3 loss at the Pittsburgh Penguins. The rookie is 6-0-0 at home this season.
"I thought he made some key saves at key times," Islanders coach Barry Trotz said. "I thought he was really good when they got it tied 2-2. They have a couple of good looks and he looked very calm. He didn't get small by the moment and then in the shootout, he was outstanding."
Hart started for the first time since March 25, when he was pulled in the second period of an 8-3 loss to the Rangers after he allowed five goals on 11 shots.
"He played well tonight," Flyers coach Alain Vigneault said. "He did what we expect a goaltender to do, give your team chance, and he did that."
NOTES: Sorokin is the sixth goalie in NHL history to win his first six home starts, and the first since Jaroslav Halak with the Montreal Canadiens in 2006-07.
