Flyers will play Islanders in Eastern Conference Second Round

The Philadelphia Flyers will play the New York Islanders in the Eastern Conference Second Round.

Philadelphia, the No. 1 seed, defeated the Montreal Canadiens in six games in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. New York, the No. 6 seed, eliminated the Washington Capitals in five games to advance.

Game 1 will be played at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, the Eastern Conference hub city, on Monday (7 p.m. ET; NBCSN, CBC, SN, TVAS).

"They're a [Metropolitan Division] opponent. They're a great team," Philadelphia forward Kevin Hayes said. "There's a reason they won so quickly against the Capitals. They've got a good goalie, they play a great team defense, and they have some good forwards. I'm sure we'll go watch some film and prepare the best way we possibly can for the games."

Jakub Voracek leads the Flyers with eight points (four goals, four assists), and Kevin Hayes has scored seven points (one goal, seven assists). Joel Farabee, Scott Laughton and Michael Raffl each has scored three goals. Carter Hart is 6-2-0 with a 1.71 goals-against average and .943 save percentage. Brian Elliott is 1-0-0 allowing two goals on 21 shots in two games (one start).

Josh Bailey leads the Islanders with 10 points (two goals, eight assists), Anthony Beauvillier has scored nine points (six goals, three assists), and Brock Nelson (three goals, four assists) and Mathew Barzal (three goals, four assists) each has scored seven points. Semyon Varlamov is 7-2-0 with a 1.67 GAA and .934 save percentage.

The Flyers lost all three games against the Islanders this season. Sean Couturier (two goals, one assist), Ivan Provorov (one goal, two assists) and Claude Giroux (one goal, two assists) each scored three points, and Travis Konecny scored two goals in those games. Elliott was 0-1-1 with a 2.76 GAA and .911 save percentage. Hart allowed five goals on 14 shots and was pulled in a 5-3 loss on Oct. 27.

Barzal led the Islanders with five points (two goals, three assists); Derick Brassard (one goal, three assists) scored four points; and Bailey (one goal, two assists), Anders Lee (one goal, two assists) and Nelson (three assists) each scored three points against the Flyers. Varlamov was 2-0-0 with a 3.00 GAA and .913 save percentage. Thomas Greiss allowed three goals on 31 shots in a 4-3 shootout win on Nov. 16.

"They play tight, good defensively," Philadelphia defenseman Ivan Provorov said. "When they have opportunities, they try to score. I think we just have to play our game, keep playing fast, and control the puck and not give them any chances to score."

This will be the fifth playoff series between the teams. The Flyers have won three of the four, including the most recent, in seven games in the 1987 Patrick Division Finals.

Philadelphia, which advanced to the second round for the first time since 2012, is trying to make the conference final for the first time since 2010, when it defeated the Canadiens in five games before losing the Stanley Cup Final to the Chicago Blackhawks in six games.

New York, which advanced to the second round for a second straight season, is trying to make the conference final for the first time since 1993, when it lost to the Canadiens in five games.
