The goalie was injured in the third period of the 2020 Navy Federal Credit Union NHL Stadium Series against the Los Angeles Kings at Air Force Academy in Colorado on Saturday. He left at 2:33 following a collision with Avalanche defenseman Ian Cole while Kings forward Austin Wagner was driving to the net.
"I don't really have a timeline on it," Avalanche coach Jared Bednar said Monday. "He's still getting evaluated, he's still going through some testing or training room or whatnot. I'll have a better answer probably later in the week. Right now he's day to day and could miss some time."
Grubauer is 18-12-4 with a 2.63 goals-against average and .916 save percentage in 36 games this season.
Pavel Francouz, who has made two starts since Jan. 14 and relieved Grubauer on Saturday, will start against the Tampa Bay Lightning at Pepsi Center on Monday (9 p.m. ET; ESPN+, TVAS, SN, ALT, SUN, NHL.TV). Hunter Miska, who was recalled from the Colorado Eagles of the American Hockey League on Sunday, will be the backup.
Bednar said that Avalanche forward Matt Calvert, who has 25 points (12 goals, 13 assists) in 50 games this season, is expected to be out a couple of weeks because of a lower-body injury.
"We're hoping it's an injury where we can get him back skating and playing here in the next couple weeks, but it's weeks, not days," Bednar said. "I'm not sure what happened, he felt it, pain in the lower body and it got worse and worse. So he's got whatever you call it, oblique strain."
The Avalanche (33-18-6), who have lost two straight games following a five-game winning streak, are in third place in the Central Division, two points behind the St. Louis Blues and Dallas Stars.
