The forward did not practice Wednesday. He has scored 19 points (12 goals, seven assists) on an NHL career-long 13-game point streak, the longest current streak in the NHL.
"It's next man up, as we've had for a few years now. It's no different," Penguins defenseman Marcus Pettersson said. "New guys have to step up. New opportunities. So we'll see what happens. Haven't heard anything. We'll see what happens. But like I said, it's next man up and new opportunities for guys."
Evan Rodrigues moved from first-line right wing to Guentzel's spot at left wing during practice. Kasperi Kapanen was elevated from the third line to take Rodrigues' place.
Drew O'Connor skated in Jason Zucker's spot at second-line left wing. Zucker had a maintenance day, coach Mike Sullivan said.
"Those are pretty big shoes to fill, obviously," Kapanen said. "Jake's been one of our best players, if not our best player for a long period now. So just use my speed. Try to get open. Try to get Sid and 'E-Rod' the puck because they've been playing some good hockey lately."
The Penguins are also without forwards
Evgeni Malkin
(knee) and Bryan Rust (lower body). Malkin, the second-line center when healthy, has practiced in a no-contact jersey recently after having surgery June 4; Rust, the first-line right wing, has not skated since last playing Nov. 24.
Sullivan said the Penguins would be reluctant to recall a player from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton after the American Hockey League team had its past four games postponed because of COVID-19 protocol.
