Jarry Tatar PIT MTL

Tristan Jarry will start for the Pittsburgh Penguins against the Montreal Canadiens in Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Qualifiers at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto on Friday (4 p.m. ET; NBCSN, NHL.TV, SN, TVAS, ATTSN-PT).

It will be the 2020 postseason debut for Jarry, who replaces Matt Murray after the two-time Stanley Cup winner (2016, '17) allowed four goals on 31 shots in Game 3 on Wednesday, a 4-3 loss that has the Penguins facing elimination in the best-of-5 series.

"Tristan Jarry's going to play goal, and I'd rather not discuss the discussion that the coaches had," coach Mike Sullivan said Friday.

Jarry was 20-12-1 with a 2.43 goals-against average and .921 save percentage in 33 games (31 starts). He went 12-2-0 with a 1.78 GAA, .941 save percentage and three shutouts in 14 games from Nov. 16-Dec. 30 and started 22 games from Dec. 4-Feb. 26.

"His practice habits have drastically improved. I think it's just the maturity, it's just part of the maturation process." Sullivan said about Jarry. "He's much more mature in his daily approach every day. His work habits in practice have been terrific all year, consistent. I think that transfers. I think those types of habits transfer to a game environment. So Tristan deserves a lot of credit for how hard he's worked on his game and where he's at today. He's a real good goalie."

Murray has a 2.50 GAA and .914 save percentage in the Qualifiers after going 20-11-5 with a 2.87 goals-against average and an NHL career-low .899 save percentage.

The winner of the series between the No. 5 seed Penguins and No. 12 seed Canadiens in Toronto, the hub city for the Eastern Conference, will advance to the first round Stanley Cup Playoffs. The loser will have a 12.5 percent chance at the No. 1 pick in the 2020 NHL Draft in the Second Phase of the NHL Draft Lottery, to be held Monday (6 p.m. ET; NBCSN, NHLN, SN, TVAS).
