POSTGAME 5: Islanders Blank Flyers, 4-0

The Philadelphia Flyers ended a winless four-game road trip on Saturday with a 4-0 loss to the New York Islanders at UBS Arena. The Flyers were outscored on the road trip by a combined 16-5. Philadelphia is 0-5-1 in its last six games. The Flyers are winless in the last 10 road games and 12-20-8 for the season in road games.

A deflected Scott Mayfield shot (6th goal of the season) at 14:19 of the first period sent the Islanders to intermission with a lead despite being outplayed by the Flyers in the opening stanza.
New York took over the game in the second period. A Brock Nelson goal (34th) off the rush gave the Islanders a 2-0 lead at 7:50. The Islanders shrugged off a disallowed goal at the 12:05 mark after Zach Parise played the puck into the net with a high stick. New York made it 3-0 at 15:06 on a Sam Bolduc tally (2nd) from the left circle.
The Islanders were mostly content to check in the third period. But the Flyers got caught flat footed late in the third period. Hunter Fasching (8th) added an extra insurance goal to open a 4-0 edge at 18:21.
Carter Hart played the game's first 40 minutes, stopping 15 of 18 shots. He was pulled for the third period. There was no injury. It was a coach's decision. Felix Sandström came in for the third period, stopping two of three shots.
Ilya Sorokin wasn't tested much after the first period. He ultimately stopped all 27 shots that he faced.
The Flyers went 0-for-2 on the power play. The Islanders were also 0-for-2.

TURNING POINT
A failed clearing opportunity by Laughton started the sequence that led to Mayfield's goal. The Flyers, who never led at any point of the four games on the road trip, were chasing the game yet again.
MELTZER'S TAKE
1) The Flyers had five of the game's first six shots on all and 10 of the first 14. Philly had early chances from Frost (tip-in at the doorstep) and Tippett (missed the net from point-blank range) in the opening minute of the game. At the other end, Casey Cizikas missed from in close off a nice centering pass.
At 6:27, Tippett put on a burst of speed and beat the defense. He was unable to get much on an ensuing shot attempt. Near the midpoint of the period, Wade Allison had two separate opportunities from the doorstep but was unable to pot one.
On just their fifth shot of the game, the Islanders took a 1-0 lead at 14:19. It was a simple play: Laughton had an unpressured clearing opportunity but turned over the puck. Mayfied wristed a shot from up with high layered traffic in front. The puck appeared to deflect off JVR and into the net. The goal was initially credited to Anders Lee but changed at intermission to credit Mayfield. The assists went to Simon Holmstrom and Bo Horvat.
Shortly after the Mayfield goal, Sanheim fired a shot on net with two teammates driving the net. Again, Sorokin took care of it.
2) First period shots on goal were 15-8 Flyers. Shot attempts were 28-26 Islanders. Scoring chances were 14-11 Islanders but high-danger chances favored Philadelphia, 6-1. The Flyers weren't able to generate much in the way of sustained pressure but it was a decent period overall.
3) It wasn't quite as lopsided as the second period in Dallas on Thursday but there was a clear shift in the second period that favored the Islanders, and the scoreboard soon reflected it.
At 7: 50, Dobson connected on a stretch pass to Nelson. With Sanheim getting lost in one-on-one coverage, Dobson rifled a shot home for a 2-0 New York lead.
Ristolainen was called for hooking during a scramble with a puck bouncing around in front of the Flyers' net at 10:11. It was an eventful next two minutes.
Tippett had a shorthanded chance but hit the post. At 11:30, Frost put a routine slap shot on net from the blueline. Ryan Pulock attempted to tuck the rebound back to Sorokin but instead it went through the pads and very nearly into the net before Pulock swept it to safety. At the other end of the ice, a rebound popped in the air and Parise knocked it home from above the crossbar at 12:05. The play was initially ruled a good goal but overturned on replay from the obvious high stick.
New York made it 3-0 at 15:06. Hart yielded a bad goal on this one: a Bolduc left circle shot that beat the netminder under the armpit to the short side. The assists went to Horvat at Holmstrom.
4) Second period shots on goal were 10-4 Islanders. Shot attempts were 16-12 Islanders. Scoring chances were 13-6 Islanders. High-danger chances were 5-1 Islanders.
5) In the third period. Kyle Palmieri tripped at 4:25 as the Flyers went on their first power play. York made a good defensive play, a crisp outlet pass and jumped into the play in the offensive end. Sorokin made the save.
At 9:08, Lemieux was called for hooking Cizikas on a call made in the Philadelphia zone by the trailing referee. The Flyers killed it off in good shape but needed to start generating some offense in a hurry.
The Flyers went back to the power play on a high-sticking penalty on Noah Dobson against Konecny along the board in the Philadelphia zone at 14:12. Philadelphia struggled to get up until late and then could not got any pucks to the net.
With 1:39 left in the game, the Islanders generated a 2-on-1 on a Noah Dobson stretch pass to J-G Pageau. After a cross-ice pass to Hudson Fasching joining the attack, Fasching buried it for a 4-0 cushion.
Third period shots were 8-3 Flyers. Shot attempts were 20-11 Flyers. Scoring chances were 8-6 Flyers. High-danger chances were 4-0 Flyers (11-6 Flyers for the game).
