Ellis initially remained on the bench and talked to a trainer before heading to the locker room for the remainder of the game.
Nashville coach Peter Laviolette did not have an update on Ellis.
"Honestly, I don't have any details to share with you," he said. "Not that I would."
Trailing 3-2 in the best-of-7 series with Game 6 in Nashville on Sunday (8 p.m. ET; NBC, CBC, SN, TVA Sports), the Predators are hopeful that Ellis' injury isn't serious.
"I didn't know what happened, so I can't really say too much," goaltender Pekka Rinne said. "But hopefully it's just precautionary."
Ellis has played in all 21 of Nashville's Stanley Cup Playoff games this season. He entered Thursday fourth on the Predators with an average of 24:01 of ice time per game in the postseason and has 13 points (five goals, eight assists), which is third in the NHL among defensemen.
However, the Predators will have center Colton Sissons available for Game 6. Sissons received a match penalty for cross-checking Penguins defenseman Olli Maatta in the face with 33.3 seconds remaining in the third period. A match penalty carries an automatic suspension until the play is reviewed by Commissioner Gary Bettman; however, the NHL Department of Player Safety said Friday that Sissons would not be suspended.
Laviolette said after game 5 that he didn't think Sissons deserved any supplemental discipline.
"I watched it play out," Laviolette said. "I saw Maatta cross-check him. Colton cross-checked him back. Maatta cross-checked him back, and it looked like they were doing it somewhere in the midsection. On the last one, Maatta seemed to slip and his head dropped. I don't think that there was any intention there whatsoever. So I don't think [there will be any supplemental discipline], but it's not my call."
